After Howie Morenz retired from the Canadiens the Habs were a losing team, so they asked the league which was based in Montreal the right to the first two Quebec born players in the upcoming draft, the NHL complied, imagine the players that the other teams could not touch, this ruling came to an end in 1969,Marc Tardiff and Rejean Houle were the last two players plucked from La Belle Province.

what about how in a tight game the refs are instructed to help the Habs with penalties at critical moments?
I am sure there were a lot of weird draft situations like this through the years. If anyone knows of any others....let us know...
They always had a lot of help from the refs. Many years back, I remember Dave Poulin while shorthanded put a great shoulder to shoulder check to a Canadian. They called tripping. WTF! Replays showed the hit was no where near the legs......just a great shoulder to shoulder check. That's just one I remember.

Hi Bronco, there is truth to what you have to say, when the Montreal Canadiens faced the Boston Bruins before their semi final encounter in 1979 Don Cherry the coach of the Bruins went to the press and said" the refs always gives Montreal a goal a game at home" surely enough in the last game Boston was winning by a goal with minutes to play to win the series ... the Bruins were called for too many men on the ice they were penalized Don Cherry stands on the bench as we saw in Coach's Corner throughs his arms up in dispair as to say "see" to the fans "are you happy now you got what you wanted!" Lafleur scores!Lambert nets the winner in overtime Canadiens win the series then go on to beat the Rangers in the final to win the last of four Stanley Cups in a row.
Can't talk Habs hockey, and not mention Toe Blake.
happy 108th birthday toe blake fan!
Thank you for the reminder Toe Blake was the Vince Lombardi of hockey.
