Which Eric Davis Rookie Card?

If you could only have one which one would you buy? Personally, I am looking at PSA 9 for the base cards and an 8ish for the Tiffany. Assume all have decent centering.

    1985 Fleer #533

The image on the 1985 Fleer is my personal favorite. The Topps RCs is an ugly pic to me for some reason, which takes out Topps and Tiffany in my eyes only. I love the 1985 Donruss image, but it is fairly easy to find in PSA 10. Pure investment, Tiffany will be where the money flows. Sleeper is his base Topps. It is a nightmare in PSA 10, since the card is always off centered.

The backswing on the Donruss image seems like a classic timeless image.
Bonus: Is that Pete Rose on Deck? In 26 Games that Pete Rose managed/played for Reds in 1984, he batted behind Davis 4 times.

FWIW, when he was hot, I think in 1987, the '85 Donruss was the card to have. I remember a card dealer showing me one of the newly discovered 1985 Chong Modesto McGwire's in '87 when he was hot. He said it wasn't for sale, but if someone walked in with a 1985 Donruss rack pack with Davis on top, he would trade it. To the two of us, those were the hottest items of the day.

I would agree that at the peak of his popularity, the 85 Donruss Eric Davis was the one everyone was after. For nostalgia's sake, the Donruss gets my vote, then.

Thanks everyone for the comments. The pole results look to be about as split as I was on this one when I created this thread.

Thanks for the history on the Donruss card. I wasn’t sure what was the big one back in the day.

    1985 Fleer #533

Yep, I remember the $35 price tags affixed to the '85 Donruss card in the fall of '87 or so. I've just always preferred the Fleer, though. The card really pops in color thanks to the red jersey combined with the red borders.

I can't post about Eric Davis rookies without mentioning his 1984 Wichita Aeros minor league card. It's not especially attractive given it's black and white but it was produced by a local card dealer (who is still in business) and was rather pricey when Davis was in his prime.

The 85D is not only my favorite ED card but also one of my
Favorite cards of all time. I pulled him out of a pack that I got from a dealer in NJ in early 88. I was just stunned. Beautiful card of a complete beast of a player for a brief period.

    1985 Topps #627

I'd take the Topps in a grade higher than Tiffany..... the straight Topps issues are flying off the shelves.... Gooden, Clemens, Mcgwire, etc... otherwise I 'd take the Tiff. in the same grade...hardly enlightening rocket science.

Looks like the Donruss takes the win! Thanks for all your feedback!

At first I was going to select the '85 Topps Tiffany, but remembered how this issue tones/yellows over time. I personally like the Fleer better, but for Davis it's the Donruss card he is remembered for in the hobby.
