Yes, sir. Though skateboarding fans may know of earlier issues?

Just went back and looked at my texts to the other participant, this one hit QA2 really late Monday (after 4-5pm PST) or really early Tuesday (before 6am PST), so you should be really, really close.

IIRC @dustinspeaks is a skateboarding fan maybe he can chime in.

Man, those are some rare cards. I think you did well but do empathize with the disappointment we've all felt at one time or another. :)

I enjoy subs like this more than ones where every card is equal to or slightly below expectations. This one had some real highs and lows to keep in interesting as I scrolled down.

I think Mia Hamm is a good S.I. for Kids card to look out for.

Agreed. I got all the early SIFKs in this batch from one large purchase and was surprised both the Hawk and Mia were in it. They may all get cracked after another inspection as I was expecting 8s or better on most.

Always a cool assortment from you Kyle. Congrats on the wins. Every sub has its ups and downs. Thanks for letting me piggyback with you. Some highs and lows for me too, but overall, my part was a win. Can’t wait to get my cards back.

You had to suffer through some of my crazy assortment letting me piggyback for the Long Beach shows, happy to pay it back ;)

    Some nice Arnies in there!

    • I've noticed that SI For kids are really hard to get above 5-7 range. Any suggestions based on your experience with finding quality SI for kids cards. I am building olympian, golf and tennis HOF rookie sets and there are probably 40 SI for kids cards across the 3.

Perforated cards are always a bit of a gamble, the Joe Louis was from the same booklet I also graded these from a couple years ago with much better results ...
1981 Smithsonian Institute Champions of American Sports Muhammad Ali 7
1981 Smithsonian Institute Champions of American Sports A.J. Foyt 10
1981 Smithsonian Institute Champions of American Sports Bobby Hull 10
1981 Smithsonian Institute Champions of American Sports Sandy Koufax 10
1981 Smithsonian Institute Champions of American Sports Willie Mays 9
1981 Smithsonian Institute Champions of American Sports Joe Namath 7
1981 Smithsonian Institute Champions of American Sports Jack Nicklaus 10
1981 Smithsonian Institute Champions of American Sports Knute Rockne 10
1981 Smithsonian Institute Champions of American Sports Johnny Unitas 10
The Louis scans are available here: https://www.ebay.com/itm/303725263111

The Babe, I'll have to get back to you on. I had to return it for a Mech Error correction (it was actually the Black Rings variation), and I've got it back in hand, but haven't got around to scanning that batch yet.

    Hamm: https://www.ebay.com/itm/303671064138
    Kite: https://www.ebay.com/itm/303725263119
    Couples

All three of these had a thumb indent, otherwise they would have been in the 7-8 range (Hamm 8, Kite/Couples 7).

On the perforated cards, sheet position can be a good indication of difficulty. The lower right corner card seems to be the most likely to get dinged (see Smithsonian Ali above ;) ), followed by upper right, then center right. The center and middle left are the easiest to get high grades on. I've had the best luck on grades by purchasing complete magazines, followed by stacks of sheets(either mixed or multiples of the same sheet). This batch was from a large lot of various singles and you can see the results. I've had pretty decent success purchasing quantity of singles for the more recent issues and picking the best 1 or 2 for submitting also.

When purchasing complete magazines or sheets, make sure you can see the perforations to get a good indication of centering. In one instance where I didn't follow this, I purchased 25 sheets from the same magazine and all 25 had perforations through the center of the cards rendering them useless for my purposes. I have yet to submit the elusive PSA 10 for an SIFK card, but have submitted many 8s and 9s, including 9s of some really difficult ones.

Find some cheap perforated sheets to practice on. The best method I've found is one full fold each direction, find a sharp 90 degree surface (office desk, end table, etc.), line up the fold, and pull down firmly. Repeat until you've got singles. It's possible to just keep folding back and forth until they basically fall apart at the perforations, but hurts the grade as this tends to bunch up the edge and the perforation tears don't look as clean.

Many of the recent SIFK sheets have poor perforations either vertical or horizontal and you end up with what looks like a torn edge or two instead of perforated. I haven't tried to submit any like this, but wouldn't expect they would grade well.

Dumb question. Can you slice along the perforations with a razor/straight edge?

    Awesome assortment of cards Kyle!

Conundrum - Loving my unopened baseball card collection....but really like ripping too

Only if you like Auth grades, cuts should preclude a number grade for perforated cards (both slicing the center of the perforations or slicing the perforations off completely), though I've seen a few slip through the cracks ...

Blurry pictures on the eBay listing, and when I got it in hand I realized why. Instead of a pop 1 PSA 10, I way overpaid for an Auth in the wrong holder. Buy the flip, not the card :'(

    Awesome assortment of cards Kyle!

    Thanks!

How does a perforated card like that slip by? Isn't it looked at by 2-3 graders before being slabbed? (Rolling eyes)

I managed to pop two of these back in 2013. I separated them from the sheets myself. I had purchased dozens of issues from the first several years of SIFK back then and separated all the cards. I believe these two were the first 10s, and they're a Pop 4 now. I had a subscription of SIFK when I was a kid so I loved going through these again.

    21647531 GEM MINT 10 1989 S.I. for Kids 19 Wayne Gretzky Card
    21647532 GEM MINT 10 1989 S.I. for Kids 19 Wayne Gretzky Card

Larkin's method is pretty accurate... I would gently bend them at the perforation a couple times (never at a full 90-degrees) until it loosened and then carefully pulled them straight apart. Definitely NO blade. I wish I still had the scans of these before I sold them.

Aaaaaaand I just looked up this card on ebay... one of my old certs just sold last month for $324.97, and now PWCC has that same card listed for a cool $1000. LOL

i just checked my old email, back in 2013 one of them sold for $130 and the other for $200. I was happy with that back then. NO REGERTS! LOL
