1824/2 Bust Quarter

NSPNSP Posts: 322 ✭✭✭✭✭

I tried posting this several days ago, but it appears that the forum “ate” the post, so let’s try again...

This 1824/2 bust quarter is the newest addition to my bust quarter collection, and I’m very excited to finally own an example of this scarce date!

Nobody knows for certain how many quarters were struck bearing the date 1824/2, but the Steve Tompkins book claims that the 16,000 coins delivered on December 31, 1823 likely constitute the entire mintage of 1824/2 quarters. Supposedly the mint’s practice at the time was to use the following year’s dies starting after Christmas, so there is probably a one week window in which this coin was struck.

Only one die marriage has been identified for this date (Browning-1, R3). The obverse features an overdate with the 4 punched over a 2. It’s thought that the flurry of overdates in the mid 1820s is due to the mint trying to use outdated dies as much as possible following the death of Chief Engraver Robert Scot in 1823. The reverse die was reused from 1822 B-3 and 1823/2 B-1 (except on the 1824/2, the arrowheads and arrow shafts have been fully engraved). A diagnostic die scratch can be seen at the lower edge of the bottom-most arrowhead. This reverse die would go on to strike 1825/4/2 B-1 and 1828 B-2. Interestingly enough, the five die marriages struck from this reverse die are all tough to acquire, ranging from scarce (1824/2 B-1) to unique (1822 B-3).

The die scratch extending from the lower arrowhead is quite apparent in this picture.

This particular coin is a very nice, original, eye appealing example graded G04 by PCGS with a green CAC sticker. Many of the low grade 1824/2 quarters have been messed with somehow (cleaned, damaged, scratched, graffitied, etc.), so this one is out of the ordinary. It was definitely worth saving up my money and waiting to buy a nice example like this coin.

If you own an example of the 1824/2, please feel free to share!

Excellent writeup NSP and tremendous coin, congratulations!

Tough coin to find, in demand by all of BQ date, Redbook, and variety collectors, these always seem more expensive than they should be (more than some far rarer marriages) and they sure do come sometimes odd looking, here is the one I settled on "for now" till I land one like yours or scubafuel's

Really nice 1824 for the grade, and as you noted, a coveted scare date due to the low mintage. I like your mention about the 1822 B-3 too. Have you ever noticed that the large size capped bust quarters sometimes naturally wear in such a way that it looks like there is a number "7" in the middle of the coin between the hair curls, jaw line, and neck of Liberty?

I have a couple of 1824's. An AU example, and this double struck VF30:

Very nice 1824/2’s! And as @1TwoBits mentioned, I have noticed the “7” that appears when these coins wear. Here are a few others from my collection that have the “7.”

    I see the 7!
It even has a flourish underline.
Never noticed before, something new every day in 200 year old quarter land 😉
