Babe Ruth didn’t only stop for hot dogs before games so what’s the point? Judgement should be on the field accomplishments. In today’s world with cameras and social media things are magnified 1000x’s more.
Just saying not fair to judge today’s athletes off field activities compared to just 50 years ago.
W.C.Fields "I spent 50% of my money on alcohol, women, and gambling. The other half I wasted.
The 1987 OPC Bonds is HOT right now. Just put up two PSA 8's last night for $250 each and both sold in under 10 min.!! Think I might put up my PSA 9 this weekend at this rate!!

That's amazing. Who would have even thought to hold on to PSA 8's.
_> Bonds will never be in the same class as guys like Mantle and Aaron, no matter what his home run totals say.

That's because Mantle and Aaron HAD class and Bonds never did and never will.
Mantle had class?? you have got to be kidding. He was a drunk for crying out loud. a terrible father and a terrible teammate
He was a great teammate, he was a drunk and an absolute disaster as a husband and father.
no joe, he was not a great teammate. He did not respect his body or his game. he was constantly breaking curfew because of his drinking. he did not dedicate himself to the game. his was wasted potential. he could have been the greatest bar none, instead, he selfishly chose a life of debauchery. a good teammate will dedicate himself to his craft and be a leader: both by example and vocally. Mantle did none of these things. He showed up tired or hung over and relied of his talent. think of what some dedication would have done for both himself and his team.
Mantle may have been a popular guy to hang out or party with, but a good teammate? not even close.

I looked at it differently. Even though most or all of what you say is true, he was much more approachable than Joe Dimaggio was, he always gave 100% when on the field and played hurt a lot.
His team mates loved playing with him is what I was getting at.
I don't think his play suffered that often (especially early in his career) because of his drinking the night before. As far as his debauchery, I doubt that caused him any trouble on the field. I have a feeling a lot of players have a lot of sex with women that are not their wives/girlfriends when they are on the road. Mickey was a world class cheater though. Couldn't have been much worse as a father either. He said so himself; "I'm not a role model, don't be like me".
I seriously doubt that his teammates knew or cared about what Mickey did off the field as long as he was able to perform when on the field. I really don't know how much better he could have been, he was the best offensive player in the AL just about every single season.
I certainly don't think less of him as a player, because he was a bad husband and father. Not really my place to judge.
In one of his stories about drinking and his his play, he and Whitey went out drinking because Ford had just pitched and Mickey was not expected to play. When called on to pinch hit he was still able to hit a home run.
Alcoholism is a disease and it killed him.
