Preserving Old Holders & Getting TrueView Images

JBNJBN Posts: 1,852 ✭✭✭✭✭

Wonderful that PCGS offers TrueView options while maintaining the coin in its present holder. I recently submitted five coins for this option. Thanks @PCGSPhoto for taking the time to provide specific instructions. I was nervous and did not want to lose the holders.
First coin is a superb member of my Bust half collection. This coin is fantastically untoned. The holder is important as a marker to demonstrate a happy, stable, untoned coin. I reiterate that this half dollar is a great experience in hand. I adore superbly toned coins but like the collection to exhibit untoned coins, too.

What did you put on the submission form? I emailed Phil about this option but he never explained exactly how to fill it out, and thus, I did not send mine in, as I did not want to risk them being cracked.

I used a manual form. For sections 3 through 7, I filled in large letters over the whole sections. Heck, so you can see for yourself, here is the sheet with the personal stuff blocked out:

    I love it 😂 I would’ve written the same.

    Great trueview. Great coin.

This is the best of both worlds for those that want/prefer a TV. I personally prefer the photos I have had done by the great photographers like Mark Goodman over TV's; but either way keeping the old holders is awesome.

That PCGS does this is very cool. Old holders should never be sacrificed for images.

Which is more accurate? The white coin or the reddish True View?

    Very nice old green holder.
That is the best 55 I've seen.

I do understand that you have extensive experience in shooting Bust coins. I know you do the photo work for Sheridan Downey.
The phone photos were in the afternoon sun.
The coin is whiter in hand. In hand , you can note the hues at the upper and lower outer areas (obv).
Coin has appearance of TV when viewed with indirect lighting.
Side by side in hand, the 1839 in the other thread does not have the subtle hues in the 1830. The 39 appears a bit silvery and has a little less (although still copious) luster than the 30.

Holder is very clean. Usually part of the gold decal on the holder reverse has succumbed to a dealer's sticker.

Wow I did not know that PCGS did trueviews without making you reholder the coin. Any other specific info we should know before trying this? Are there restrictions on this process? Do we have to inform someone at PCGS before sending a form like this?

  • Could this also be used for CAC coins, to avoid having to send the coins back to CAC to be restickered after being cracked out to photo?

    LOL
You’d think they’d add a box “Do Not Crack Out” to save you the anxiety. But they don’t have a “Holder Reverse Up” option either .... and I’ve scrawled in bold letters “Holder Reverse Up” all over the form, too. 🤓
