Canadian coins - dealers / resources?

PedzolaPedzola Posts: 1,027 ✭✭✭✭✭

I would like to put together a 1953 set of Canadian coinage. Ebay not turning up much. I am not seeing many Canadian coins at all, apart from bullion. Graded coins seem rare. Cant really find any pricing info either. Any dealer recommendations? Other resources? Appreciate any help.

Go to the CoinsandCanada site. It will give you book prices as well as Ebay sold prices. Good reference, but pricings off, especially varieties.

Are you looking for graded or raw? What grade range. For the most part prices are reasonable unless you're wanting MS66 and up. There is a 5c mule that's expensive in any grade.

I adore the Canadian coinage and the Newfoundland pieces, as well. However, I don't have great luck turning up scores of coins. Oddly enough, I have a single 1953 CDN piece that is pretty darn nice, in my opinion, but I don't know what you are looking for in terms of your collection and so don't know if it might be a good fit.

Regardless, good luck with your search.

Regular uncirculated MS64-MS66 range is what I was thinking.
Prefer "white" untoned coins. Might consider raw set, prefer graded. Looking for the full type set - $1, 50c, 25c, 10c, 5c, 1c.

Still learning about these... like the look of prooflike coins but since this is not my core collecting area might stay away from anything very pricey.

Compared to US coins of the same era these seem pretty rare in PCGS/NGC plastic.

No love at all for Canadian coins. Just purchased 20 1963-1966 prooflike sets on ebay for a couple bucks under melt. Surprised stackers are not all over these.

Not sure exactly what I will do with them yet. Maybe consider sending the best 6 coins out for NGC holders as a type set.

In pictures it looks like most of these PL sets hold up pretty well in the original cellophane . Anxious to see what they look like in person. My 20 sets were 4 diff lots from 3 diff sellers.

these full year sets are more valuable sealed in the ORIGINAL cello wrap!!!
check your 1966 for small beads dollar
and the 1965 for 5 different varieties on the dollar.

Thanks for heads up on varieties. Will check them out when they come in. None have shipped yet, hopefully get some tracking numbers tomorrow.

And not to argue, but Ebay sales indicate these 60's sets are worth more sold as bullion in tubes (toss the 1c / 5c!) than in original cellophane. But I will not break up any sets or remove from cello without careful consideration. Maybe I just pick the best set and keep it original, and resell the rest.

I didnt realize until today that there will be 2 different queen portraits for the sets I got. 63,65,66. Learning by trial and error.
