Jim Abbott Rookie Checklist on PSA Set Registry

DeutscherGeistDeutscherGeist Posts: 2,990 ✭✭✭✭

The PSA Set Registry has been a useful tool in figuring out what rookie cards a particular player has. Here is the list on Jim Abbott:

1988 TOPPS TRADED JIM ABBOTT 1T
1989 BOWMAN JIM ABBOTT 39
1989 DONRUSS ROOKIES JIM ABBOTT 16
1989 FLEER UPDATE JIM ABBOTT U-11
1989 SCORE TRADED JIM ABBOTT 88T
1989 TOPPS JIM ABBOTT 573
1989 UPPER DECK JIM ABBOTT

Jim Abbott has a 1989 Topps card where he was in his Michigan uniform and a Topps Traded card in an Angels uniform. There is a regular and tiffany version of this. Also, there is a 1989 Bowman Tiffany too. There is also a 1988 Topps Traded Tiffany and I assume a 1989 Score Traded Glossy and 1989 Fleer Update Glossy. So, seven cards that could have been on that list are not present. Is this an omission or is there reason for it?

Maybe Glossy or Tiffany cards are variants that are simply not included, but 1989 Topps Traded should be there.

In regards to rookie sets, tiffany cards are not included. Since there is already a 1988 TT of his, the 1989 version would then be considered a "second year" card.

OK, I get their rationale. I did not realize Abbott had two 1989 Topps cards until recently. Such lists really help with knowing what is out there.

As for the 1989 Topps Traded

In the 1994 Finest set Dave Staton of the Padres has 2 cards, one on the "Rookie/Stars" background and one of the standard player designs. He is the only player in the 440 card set to have 2 cards. I have no idea why.

Always looking for 1993-1999 Baseball Finest Refractors and1994 Football Finest Refractors.

    there's also a '89 topps big card.

I was speaking more along the lines of having two Topps Traded cards in a rookie set. That would be like if Dale Murphy had a rookie set and they would include the 1977 Topps and the 1978 Topps.

The PSA rookie card registry of single players are quite useful to the collector. While the Tiffany/Glossy versions are not on the list, one can still collect them for their own interest and pride and make up a comprehensive rookie set. Technically, one can argue, the 1988 Topps Traded card is an Olympic card and the 1989 Topps Traded is a rookie card with the Angels. If it were up to me, I would include the 1989TT in the rookie set. Semantics aside, It is up to the collector to decide what they want to include in their personal collection. It makes for a nice conversation.

If the 1988TTT is the most expensive Abbott card, what would be the second one?

I am sure as collectors, we each have our pet project that makes sense to us. Jim Abbott has been one of my favorite players ever since he won the gold medal at the Olympics and went on to have a career in the Major Leagues. I have decided that I want to collect all of his rookie cards in PSA 10. While the PSA registry is a guide, it has omitted some cards that I felt should belong. This is my own list of capturing all of his rookie cards and hopefully some of you can fill me in if I miss a few candidates:

1988 TOPPS TRADED JIM ABBOTT 1T
1988 TOPPS TRADED TIFFANY JIM ABBOTT 1T
1989 UPPER DECK JIM ABBOTT 755
    1989 BOWMAN JIM ABBOTT 39
1989 BOWMAN TIFFANY JIM ABBOTT 39
1989 DONRUSS THE ROOKIES JIM ABBOTT 16
    1989 DONRUSS BASEBALL's BEST JIM ABBOTT 171
1989 FLEER UPDATE JIM ABBOTT U-11
1989 FLEER UPDATE GLOSSY JIM ABBOTT U-11
1989 SCORE TRADED JIM ABBOTT 88T
    1989 TOPPS JIM ABBOTT 573
1989 TOPPS TIFFANY JIM ABBOTT 573
    1989 TOPPS TRADED JIM ABBOTT
1989 TOPPS TRADED TIFFANY JIM ABBOTT
1989 TOPPS BIG BASEBALL JIM ABBOTT 322
    1989 TOPPS M.L. DEBUT JIM ABBOTT 1

Any 1989 card is a rookie season card for my collecting purposes. The 1988 USA cards are not really his true rookies, but I like them anyway. It's kind of like a minor league card, so very much collectible. Besides, I want to collect all rookie cards from the PSA registry plus the others I listed. Did I miss anything? Is there no 1989 Score Traded Glossy? How about a standard issue 1989 Donruss card?

    was a 1990 issue?

Jim Abbott was a pretty big deal for a couple of years. Quite an inspiration to many.

Thank you junkwaxgems and Loyalty32! I knew that I would be getting some kind of revision.

fightfraud24 and firstbase23, I looked at the cards from the 1989 Topps ML Debut. The PSA designation is 1989 and the card manufacturing date is 1989 also. The design looks to be from the Topps 1990 series, not the 1989. So, you were on to something and thank you for pointing that out.

Nice to meet another Mattingly fan, firstbase23! I should do a rookie card collection of him too. It may be a little late in getting the PSA 10s though. I have PSA 9s and raw cards of his rookies purchased and submitted many years ago.

I revised the list. It is still 16 cards. I do have some in PSA 10 already, but many more to go. Not as easy as the Kevin Brown or Curt Schilling rookie collection where I think only one card exists in their rookie year, 1987 Donruss and 1989 Donruss, respectively.

When I am making lists such as this I tend to reference tcdb, com. You can look to the following website to see Jim's 1989 and before cards. There are a number of unlicensed cards at the link below, so depending on what you want, you will have to filter out a few. Good luck!

I would consider adding to your list the following:
1989 Baseball Card Magazine '59 Topps Replicas #64 Jim Abbott
1989 SCD Baseball Card Price Guide Monthly #11 Jim Abbott

Other than that, you list looks complete.

    NGS48,

Your input is very appreciated and the link is indeed helpful for other player sets I might want to assemble. I revised my list to include the other 2 cards you mentioned for a total of 18 different licensed rookie cards. Thank you for pointing out the distinction between licensed and unlicensed. In my case, I just want the collection of licensed rookie cards. I think 18 cards are already too much for just a rookie card collection.
