Yet another grading company enters the arena

SDSportsFanSDSportsFan Posts: 5,136 ✭✭✭✭✭

Has anyone seen this?:

Apparently, the Certified Collectibles Group (CCG) (parent company of NGC Coin Grading and CGC Comic Book Grading), has decided to enter the sportscard grading market. They are based in Sarasota, Florida.

The new division will be CSG "Certified Sports Guaranty"

True, but at the minimum, this is going to be extremely confusing for everyone.

We already have SGC; which, I believe was a sister company of NGC and CGC at one time, before breaking off under IIRC, Dave Foreman.

Now, enter CSG to muddy the waters. So, in the future, the question will be "who are we talking about, SGC, or CSG; or is it SCG?" Hell, at that point, I won't know!!!!!

And there's already a PCGS (Coin Grading under CU).

“In quickly becoming the leader in its category”

I wonder if they actually believe this is going to happen. Yeah sure.

They might. Lots of board room discussions take place in fantasy land.

They will definitely take some business away from the other TPG's. How much and how long they will stay afloat is the question. Their entry into the market may stimulate the others in some ways: Discounts,Speedier return times etc. May be of benefit to the consumer for awhile. I'd like to see a card grading category of just authentication, at half price. Let the buyer/ seller come to agreeable terms on the grade.

Full grader notes similar to those available for comics they grade is very interesting.

While I dont see it happening, if they can be legit in how they grade, as well as maintain a realistic turnaournd time, they would be good for a lot of the things that are overwhelming the other legit TPG's.

"Leader in it's category". That's a pretty bold statement to be making. PSA is on another level, so good luck reaching that level. 😂

Now if you'll excuse me, I have a sea otter slam dunk competition to watch.

I don't think it is a service announcement, it reads like a help wanted ad.

Will be exciting to see how they do. I collect some comic books and have had several graded over the years along with some Jordan and Bo Jackson sports magazines and I have to admit their turnaround times and overall service beats PSA’s by a lot.

NO CHANCE at success. That ship has sailed.

What’s the over under on the exodus from Boca Raton to Sarasota? A brand new ship has to be more attractive than one functioning as a coral reef.

    Afternoon,

Not exactly New per se, the've been grading Comics and such since 87 and in that Arena they ARE the Gold Standard....but pricey, I used to use them when I was heavy into comics but could only afford to on $200++ valued Comics. We'll see if they make it in cards, what their price point is, turn around times, ect. I remember in late 90's and early 2000's sending a Comic was a Major Crap shoot, could be 3 weeks or 3 months, but never the protracted turnaround times like PSA. HHHMMMMM!

    YeeHah!

Interesting holders? They are not going to use the "arrowhead" corner design to protect corners?

CGC did not start until 1999.

Also, followers of comics grading will recall when CBCS started up to compete with CGC in a similar move. That has not really been successful. In order to unseat the dominant player you have to have all their strengths without their flaws, which is far easier said than done.

I have plenty of respect for the comic grading they do. The only slabs I'll buy, not that competition is great in that particular sector. Good competition, if they can provide it, works for me. Food for thought however: BGS can't overtake PSA, and Beckett's a decent sized gorilla in the hobby world. Wish them best, and here's some of their comic work.
