What are some of the interesting attributes of the 2006 Topps Heritage Set?

I bought a case of this when it first came out. Two hobby boxes have been removed and transferred to new owners. The rest is still intact. Six retail boxes remain. I thought I would one day rip wax and build a full set, but I am more interested in a set from the 1980s if at all.

If I recall correctly, each case would have some special item packed inside besides the 8 retail boxes. I do not have the case near me, but it's tempting to pull out now in the near future. Any key cards that are noteworthy from this set? Is it worth hanging on to these retail boxes longer?

Thanks for the tip. I could not find that card on eBay. I wonder how it looks like.

What key rookie cards does this set have? My baseball card knowledge seems to wane after 1992.

I'm a set builder when it comes to Heritage so they are all key. The SP's and variations are what you need to look for. You can find comprehensive checklists in many places. Other than that you want to obviously be on the look out for chromes, relics, autos, etc.

The Gordon cutout does not come up for sale too often. But, they pop up here and there. It's literally a big square cut out of most of the card ..... I have one in my complete master set :)

Go to cardboardcollection and check out the set. They list almost all of the variations and subsets produced. I am also a set builder for Heritage but have fallen behind over the last three years. There are so many chase cards in these sets that you will never see or even be able to locate. I stash a case of Heritage a year thinking I may go on a busting binge someday. Good luck on whatever you do.

    Hi Miller777,

Thanks for stopping by this thread. I appreciate your insights. Where do you buy the case from. I want to make sure I do not have only one source where I buy recent baseball card issues. I like the idea of buying a case rather than a few hobby or retail boxes.

If there were any redemptions you missed the boat on those. I can't recall if there were any or not. If you are going to sell the boxes your selling price may have to be less, due to any expired redemptions. I've held onto my sealed 03 Hetitage boxes since 03 and may have missed the boat on any redemptions. But they still could contain autos.

Good point on the redemptions. If I missed the boat on redemptions, that means all factory sealed 2006 Topps Heritage missed that same boat. I would price the sealed boxes according to what the sell price is on eBay and a few dealers like BBCE to get a good idea.

I have the master set with the Gordon cutout as well. There are two versions: the one with the entire image punched out and a second with a piece or two of the image. I've only seen the card with the entire image punched out being sold. In my opinion, the 2006 Heritage set emulates the 57 set quite well.

The Gordon cut out sounds factory deliberate. What was the purpose of that?

I don’t think so but who cares when 1 of 1’s, etc are OBVIOUSLY deliberate and are all the rage. Gordon was hot stuff coming up at the time but had no time in the bigs yet and that was the issue contractually. Topp’s jumped the gun. False start. I think it was legit.

Thank you for sharing. I have not seen this on eBay. Perhaps Topps wanted to avoid a contract breach with MLB, so instead of retooling the factory to halt printing the Gordon card, it was going to be more cost effective to keep printing as normal and then just fishing out the Gordon card and cutting out the image so there are no legal problems. I understand he was not a MLB player at the time, so Topps was not allowed to include his likeness or image, but this cut out not only saved them, it created a collector craze too, in a way.
I guess the black box was not possible?

This card pops up here and there. It's been easily a $200 plus card. I haven't seen one on e-bay in about six months or so. In due time this card will surface again. It was a must have for me to complete the set.

The omission of Griffey is interesting! Still scratching my head on that one!

I did not know Griffey is missing from the set. He was still playing, although not as many games around that time.

There is a Justin Verlander card in this set. Would that be considered one of his rookie cards?

That would be a NO. Earlier I suggested googling a 2006 checklist. Here's a decent link to sink your teeth into ....
