There’s no basketball to watch these days, but for about a million dollars, you might be able to get your hands on a LeBron James rookie card.
Only 23 of the LBJ 2003-04 Upper Deck Exquisite cards were made, which is why the one set to be made available by Goldin Auctions is expected to be so valuable, according to TMZ.
The website called the James card, No. 14 in the set, “the holy grail of modern trading cards” and it is considered to be “gem mint.”
The auction, set to begin Monday, could break a record set by Goldin when they sold a rare Mike Trout card for nearly $1 million.
“The basketball card market is on fire,” Goldin told TMZ. “We expect this will surpass the record recently sent by the $922,500 Mike Trout card to become the most valuable basketball and most valuable modern card of all time.”
The card is signed by James in blue ink and contains a patch of jersey from his rookie season with the Cavaliers. It was originally sold in a pack of four that went for $125.
As for getting back on the court, James has said he wants to return to action in Orlando, a plan that seemed set to go forward before some players balked at the idea, citing the racial tensions gripping the nation.
James told The Athletic he “believes playing in Orlando won’t deter his ability to continue inspiring change.”

Already at 900k.
Let me play the devil’s advocate. This card is 1 of 23. The other 22 owners follow this auction. Let’s set a price $1M. Now owner #2 sells. Buyer #1 is now out of the picture. Card #2 sells for $750k. Wash, rinse repeat. Card #23 sells for $80K. Buyer #1 has $1M in an $80k card. 23 cards is a manufactured rarity. Does anyone else see the madness or am I just Mr. Wilson and “Hey you kids, get off my lawn!”
