Looking for information on mystery ring with potentially ancient coin set into it

I took this into a coin shop that specializes in antiquities and they hadn't seen anything like it. They suggested I post here to see if anyone could give me any info. I'm not too concerned with value, I mainly just want to know where it may have come from/from what century. Any help is appreciated!
White markings on inside of ring appears to be some sort of identification number that may have been painted in when it was dug up, definitely not original to the ring. Back of "coin" is totally flat, so may be a medallion of sorts?

It looks to me to be something that was originally made to be a ring. I don't think the centerpiece ever was a coin.

    I wonder if that painted # is a museum inventory #... :#

Is this by any chance a vet bring back from a war zone?
