Fantasy Stamps

jayPemjayPem Posts: 4,081 ✭✭✭✭✭

I picked these up recently.
Was able to have a brief chat with one of Steve Albums numismatists who was fairly certain that these are fantasy stamps from the 60's.
Does anyone have any insight into the "fantasy stamp" phenomenon to share?
Why aren't these just simply considered numismatic fakes and why is there a decent market for these?
Some auction results are a bit higher than I would have imagined for pieces identified as such...🤔

I know ebay is flooded with them right now. (Maybe all from the same seller).

Really, the Anguilla 1967 coins are technically fantasies as they were not made for circulation in Anguilla and their authorisation was questionable. They were struck on the orders of one of the principle parties in the San Francisco Examiner newspaper.

Ah... posting at the same time 😄
Are the pieces above Anguilla stamps?

I believe these are fantasies produced in the 1950’s for collectors. Steve Album has said as much in past auction descriptions and I believe Krause has a note about them as well.

Hopefully I will have an opportunity to run them by Steve before long, he lives down the road 😊
I have seen past auction results of $300 plus. Kind of curious why the market for these is or was so high?
