Package Back from BBCE! Gorgeous rack packs!

35 out of 35! Below are 35 rack packs I just got back from BBCE following the COVID-19 Delay. I NO LONGER collect cello packs because of the difficulty in determining authenticity, so i have focused all of my collecting on rack packs from the 70s and 80s. I'll put individual pictures of these on my website collecktion.com in the coming days. If you are interested in collecting rack packs and cellos with stars on top, you must check it out. It has EVERYTHING I've learned from collecting these items over the last 15 or so years including patterns, panel placement of cards, how to protect yourself from fraud etc. I'll soon add actual collation patterns to these to make them even more useful. There is even a section when you simulate opening packs. and galleries of all of the my other collectibles including GPK and Star Wars. I'd love to add more information and pictures so let me know if anyone is interested in collaborating. I'm always up for buying, selling, and trading as well. As a side note, all of these have been purchased from eBay. I think the 75 Rack Pack might be the best authenticated 75 pack in existence.

Over 20 years ago, I bought a 75 Topps Rack Pack in a Mr. Mint auction with Brett rookie, Seaver and Reggie on Top. It was perfect. Went in an auction with a Tom Seaver theme about 18 years ago. Got ripped off. Anyway, always wondered what happened with that. That was probably the greatest 75 rack ever.

Wow. I think that 86 Topps Football caught my eye more than any other. I just love those two cards. Amazing racks.

Awesome packs and results. I’m wondering did you send in the 1985 Donruss rack with Clemens and Puckett on top and did it get authenticated? I really love that pack The Yount Ryan pack is really nice. I love the double star packs.

So, in the bunch I sent to Steve Hart before this last bunch, I sent the 1985 Donruss rack you are referring to. He rejected it because there looked to be some irregularities in the far edge of the rack. I noticed there was a nearly identical one that just sold on eBay, unauthenticated for $326. Despite all of my experience in buying rack packs, I still don't fully understand the mechanics of successfully tampering with a rack pack.

The amount depends on the value of the rack pack. For most it is $8, but the more valuable ones become $12, $25, or, even more.

How do you prepare the racks when you ship them over to BBCE? I am interested in shipping some over but want to make sure I do it safely

I was the buyer of the GAI one on eBay that you’re referring to. That’s partly why I was asking if Steve had seen yours. It’s the same panels on both our packs for Clemens and Puckett. I’ll probably keep mine in the GAI holder, it was one of the early serial numbers for GAI and the seals look good to me, but it’s hard to tell in the holder.

I'm not really an expert in packing ANYTHING and my packing skills are more reminiscent of a second grader than a functioning adult...but I pack them three to five in a stack and wrap each stack tightly in two layers of bubble wrap. I'll put them in a box filled with styrofoam peanuts. Others will cut cardboard slabs and position the racks between the cardboard so they don't move. I think for rack packs in the 80s, it is also generally ok to "fold" the racks and then wrap them in bubble tape. Not sure what others think about this. This won't work for most rack packs from the 1970s.

Yep. I was disappointed that it was rejected because the Clemens and Puckett cards are so sharp. Often times when rack packs are tampered with, a tell-tale sign is that the key cards aren't as sharp as they should be in a rack pack. Tamperers want to keep the sharp cards for themselves and pass off less-sharp cards to would-be buyers. I looked at the rack closely and while I see Steve's concerns, I wouldn't have necessarily come to the conclusion that it was tampered with, although I guess it is certainly possible.

Cool rack sub I love the Canseco’s!

Here’s one I got a decade or so ago. I’m not sure 85 donruss racks have a set collation like the 83 and before topps racks do but I’ve only seen Clemens and Puckett in the first or last cells and never in the middle. Hope that helps

Ryan - Any chance you'd sell that puckett/clemens rack pack?

I guess there’s always a chance but not really something I was planning on selling now. This is part of my Clemens collection that I started to see if he could get in the Hall of Fame.

Do you think it's just a matter of time until PSA gets into the Rack Grading, especially since BBCE is already good with the authentication element?

Are you content with the current arrangement?

That is a great question. There are others who are more familiar with PSA than me, but my guess is no. Certainly I think PSA would have gone for it by now with the high demand for unopened boxes and rack packs, but I don't really know. Being that Steve Hart is their cello expert, maybe there is an agreement or something like that.

I am content with the arrangement for a couple of reasons. 1.) Steve provides amazing customer support and the turn around time for me has always been no more than 2-3 weeks. He also personalizes the experience by sending detailed emails why items may not have been slabbed. Questions are answered within 24 hours always. Turn around time has always been super important to me, and in my opinion, and I know this isn't shared by everyone, PSA fails miserably with this - which is why I have never sent them anything. The one thing I wish is that BBCE is keep records of the rack packs ad boxes they authenticate. I'm not totally sure why they don't keep these records, but I am sure they have their reasons.

Racks can be tampered with by carefully making a incision down the length of the cell right next to the seam. The cards then can be removed searched and replaced. Then you get a sealing machine using just the thin copper wire so no patterns are put on the plastic. If done right in just 2 seconds you can make a seal right where you cut the cell along the seam. If you look at the seam you can spot the reseal but usually it takes a expert or a scam artist to notice it. You see sometimes a scam artist can spot a fake rack pack better then the expert. I dont waste my time looking for cards in the wrong places I would check the seals a trained eye can spot the reseal if you know what to look for. Also pack searchers can search the rack by moving cards around just a little they can figure out what the cards are. I believe if you have a chance for a valuable card in the rack it was most likely searched the scammers are like locust they have been searching these racks over the last 40 years I think everything is searched the scammers have left nothing of value unsearched. Remember a scammer would pull your gold teeth out of your dead body nothing stops the scammer they are relentless and I say have searched 99.999% of whats out there.
