There are a series of trends coming to a head which are fundamentally
changing the nature of the hobby. Most importantly is the collection of
modern coin for the first time since the BU roll market went bust in 1964.
This field hit it's low water mark in 1995 and has been growing in leaps
and bounds ever since. Of course, the approval and introduction of the
states quarters were the biggest single boosts to this field. If these trends
are to continue, it's easy to see a day in the future when we ask ourselves
when did this era end. The answer will be when it's no longer possible to
find collectable modern coins raw. Now it's still possible to acquire desir-
able moderns straight from circulation. It's also relatively simple to acquire
nice original mint and proof sets for a most nominal cost. Indeed the mar-
ket will actually pay you to bust them up! How long this will last is anyone's
guess, but it looks as though these trends are accelerating and it can't be
long until there's nothing left but mopping up.
