Opinions on 1986 Fleer Jordan BGS 6 - Seems like a no brainer

I'm 99.9% sure what to do with this card, but getting opinions from guys that are smarter than me is never a bad thing.

I bought this BGS 6 Jordan back in 2016 for about $860 with the thoughts of cracking and submitting to PSA, but seeing the full extent of the corner wear when I got it in hand made me shelve that idea. I knew there was corner wear when I bought it, and I liked the centering, so keeping it was always the plan.

Now, 4 years later, we all know how hot this card is, and in looking at the prices, a PSA 5 (just about $3,000) is clearly more valuable than a BGS 6 (under $2,000) . Because of that my plan now is to send it to PSA in it's BGS holder for a crossover with a minimum grade of PSA 5 which I think would be the correct grade. Because of the declared value I'll have to use the express service level for $75/15 day. Take a look at the scan below and let me know if you think I'm off base, or if you think it makes sense. Thanks for looking.

My opinion: Take your nearly 3X profit or whatever and skip PSA. I don't see it as a guaranteed PSA 5 and in 2 weeks the pricing may return to earth.

PSA is really harsh on grading 86 Fleer. I am not so sure that grades a 5. Here is my 5.5 for comparison. That upper left corner has a serious ding to it along with the other corners so wear. I hope I am wrong. I would not assume it gets a 5. I would go and look at previous PSA 5 and compare the best you can so you can get a better idea. It certainly could get PSA 5 grade depending on the grader. Not sure where you getting close to 3K for a PSA 5 Jordan as VCP below shows a much lower price. Good luck with whatever you decide.
    According to VCP
    PSA 4 avg: 1392
    PSA 5 avg: 1700
    BVG 6: Avg: 1390

I would just sell it in the BGS holder. I agree with JBrules, I can see that card getting a 4 or 4.5 cause of the corner wear. Also I would take any estimated return time from PSA with a grain of salt right now. They seem to be pretty backed up.

I wouldn't gamble on the Jordan market being as hot 6 weeks from now as it is today and I think that's about the most optimistic interval possible (2 weeks to log, 3 to grade, and a week in shipping back and forth). I'd say sell as is, take the profit, and don't look back.

Thank you all for weighing in, and I know PSA 5 is no guarantee. Although I mention value a lot in my OP, I'm only about 25/75 (25 sell and 75 keep) on whether I plan to sell it or not. As Jordan rookies keep flying higher this may be the only one I will ever have, and if I'm keeping it I feel a PSA holder might serve me best.

One thing I need to mull over is whether or not to have a minimum grade of PSA 5 like I originally mentioned. If it is less than a 5, like many have predicted, I will be out $75 and get my BVG Jordan back.

Maybe I will not specify any minimum grade and take whatever grade PSA gives me. So much to think about. lol

Thanks. Apparently VCP has not updated those sales. Crazy prices for sure.

These prices are going to regress. Sell it now, bank the money, and buy a nicer copy in 6 months.

Cash that one in and look to get an upgrade in the future if prices recess.

By the time you get that card back from PSA the whole Jordan craze will have died down. Sell it as is.

Looks like a PSA 3. I’d keep it right in that case, and sell it before the pump and dump hype is over.

Revisiting this thread 9 months later, and I have not done anything with my BGS 6. I'm very glad I didn't sell back in April. As far as changing holders, it definitely is not the no-brainer my original thread title claimed it was. lol

  • PSA 5 is not selling for much of a premium over the BGS 6 and whether or not to sell it is how beholden you are to the card. I am in the same boat with my PSA 8. I see the prices going up up up and will likely see 20k soon.

At some point the money will be so compelling I can't help but feel forced to move it, but every time I get close to pulling the trigger, the price keeps moving up. I was close a few weeks ago when it seemed prices plateaued at $15k but prices are moving up again.

List it for a ridiculous amount and enjoy the fruits of your patience.

BriantheTaxGuy, I'm in the same boat as you. I keep thinking of selling my PSA 9 but prices keep going up. I've almost pulled the trigger a few times but was hesitant as I'm not familiar with how to submit to PWCC and worried about it getting damaged or lost.

Also, I like the idea of having this very valuable card, makes for good conversation with friends when we talk about trading cards when we were kids. I had the Jordan rookie and Bird/Magic rookie as a kid and reacquired it as an adult. Funny story on the Topps Bird/Magic RC, a guy was giving out all types of cards instead of candies for Halloween when I was trick or treating (back in the 80's). And as a stupid kid, I separated all the cards, instead of keeping them together...lol.

leave it as is, I see that card coming back as a psa 4, I would list it for too much and let the market come to you. I am sure you will be happy to have it in the meantime.

just keep stalling...it's paying off quite nicely! 😉

If you can afford to keep the card, keep it. Heck, it beats 1% in money market in terms is certain return. If you want / need the cash, by all means take it. Never argue with the profit / cash on hand. It certainly provides a lot of sleep easy.

    That didn’t age well.
