San Diego Comic Con Last Major Collectibles convention postponed till 2021 and couple War Stories!

Hey Guys,

Well its official now that the yearly Comic Con in SD has been postponed till 2021. I haven't been since the early 2000's, just became too expensive. And I hear you can't even get tickets. I had Booths at at least 7-8 Comic Cons through the 80's and the 90's. This was when it was about Comic books, not what its morphed into, a Media Event for Hollywood.

My first Comic Con I sold at was in 1980 or 81. I was given my table and next to my table was Walter Koenig's table, Checkov from Star Trek. I talked with him for hours over the three days and he was a fun, nice, generous tablemate for the three days, watching each others tables when our respective companions weren't around. He was selling B & W Publicity shots and other photos of himself (No Star Trek, all that owned & copywrited by Paramount.)

I was selling Comics and some related Non Sports Cards. Just a week before the Show I had been contacted and Sold a Fine minus copy of Detective Comics #30, the Third Original appearance of Batman, I paid $600 cash and another $1000 in trade, so total into it about $1000. According to the guides and experts at the time the Book was valued at $1600-$2500. I displayed it for the first couple of days at $2500 then $2200. No takers, I had hundreds of lookers, but out of their league, this was 1980 and Whales were few and far between..

Finally on the last day when Dealers try and scoop up other Dealers stuff that didn't sell, at cheap prices, a Dealer buddy of mine from Denver said he wanted to do a trade...whatever it took, just tell him what of his inventory I wanted. So I spent the next 4 hours going through his stuff and picked out a ridiculous amount of Comics, about 3 each 300 count boxes of Mid priced $10-$50 dollar stuff. And a few high Dollar items, thinking we would negotiate this to about a third of what I've asked for. He said Fine, all yours!

I added his asking retail up later and it was $10,900.00! Over the course of the next few years I made at least $7-8K off that one trade!
