2019 Topps Heritage set question(s)

BaltimoreYankeeBaltimoreYankee Posts: 2,968 ✭✭✭✭✭

Hi - Hope everyone is staying healthy and safe.
I know there is an official 2019 Topps Heritage thread out there but rather than going through all those pages, I'm hoping for some quick help with a basic understanding of what constitutes a basic set. (This is the 2019 set - the 1970 tribute)
Last year, I purchased what I thought was a complete set of cards 1-400. It looks like the actual 'set' may run to #725. I see high number sets listed for #s 501-700 so:
What happened to #s 401-500 - are they semi-high #s?
What's the deal with #s 701-725?
Thanks!

Daniel

1 to 400 are the basic set, 401 to 500 are the short prints and 500 to 725 is the separate upgraded sets with mainly cards of rookies, players that traded uniforms during the year and veterans not included in the first 500.

    Thanks, Tony, for the response!

Anyone know just how short printed the #401-500 cards are? I can;t seem to find a complete run on eBay.

For both the regular set SP (401-500) and High Number SP (701-725) the listed odds per pack are 1:3 for blasters and 1:2 for hangers.

Blasters were 9 cards per pack so that works out to 1:27 vs regular base cards. Hangers were 35 per hanger so that works out to 1:70 vs regular base cards.

Then you can also consider a "Master Set". Those include New Age Performers, Flashbacks, etc. Some collectors have a varying criteria for what constitutes a Master Set makeup.

Thanks, guys. It seems modern card sets can be overly confusing. I am glad I grew up in the era of Topps only, a basic set with the occasional inserts in packs (1971 Topps coins, anyone?). I am interested in the 2019 and 2020 Heritage sets because they take me back to those days. (I'll also enjoy next year's (1972) set but never really cared for 1973 and 1974 Topps).
That being said - I probably will try to get the 'regular' cards #401-725 to fill out the 2019 Heritage set.

I used to think the same way Daniel. I've done a complete 180 on that. Heritage is a VAST issue that can be collected up to many levels. Most consider the following a Basic Master Set year after year.

    A. Base set 1-400
    B. Short Prints 401-500
    C. New Age Performer Subset 1-25
    D. Then & Now Subset 1-15
    E. News Flash Backs 1-15
    F. Baseball Flashbacks 1-15

Beyond this their are many, MANY other subsets including chrome, chrome parallels, autos, relics, etc that vary from year to year depending on the vintage Topps issued being celebrated. I would suggest to stick to the A-F above to keep yourself sane at the beginning. Many people collect just that year to year and stop. It's still a great feat. :)

The high number set is issued later in the year and that contains much of what I just listed but in a much smaller checklist. Many don't bother with the High Numbers and again, stop at the aforementioned "Basic Master Set"

It's the ONLY modern issue i collect and I do it with great passion :)

Sage advice there. I have the base #s 1-. I also have a bunch of the cloth stickers since I think they're pretty cool.

I think for now, I will attempt cards #1-725. I already have 1-400 and just bought the 701-725 series. I also bought a lot of 108 assorted 401-499 range and need around 30 to complete that series (I'll probably post my needs on BST as it seems there is a lot of enthusiasm for Heritage here) and it seems #s 500-699 high numbers are easy to get as a lot.
