Ripping a graded TOPPS 75 - with Pics

balco758balco758 Posts: 1,397 ✭✭✭✭✭

Damn cabin fever getting to me. I have this 82 Donruss wax box which isn’t an exciting rip. Pack after pack essentially to find 1-2 Cal’s and they need to be 10’s. The rest is borderline fireplace material!

Which brings me to the 75 cello. I have 3 Topps and 1 OPC. All bought at lower prices that today. Trying to decide if the excitement of the rip will be better than the likely depression post rip. Lol.

Either need a rally cry or to be told to step away from the unopened!

The Topps are all 9’s. The OPC (was) is an 8.

    OK, ugliest 9 then :D

    OPC !

  • remedylaneremedylane Posts: 330 ✭✭✭

Since you have 3 topps I'd go with one of those.

  • balco758balco758 Posts: 1,397 ✭✭✭✭✭

Issue with OPC is far less cards!

Help rid the U.S. of the Canadian infiltrators and rip that OPC pack so it no longer exists !!

75 Topps for sure! 75 OPC is likely going to result in a slew of cards centered 95/5.

sell the topps 9 on ebay, rebuy one in a 7 grade, keep the extra $$ and rip the 7

  • pjb103183pjb103183 Posts: 1,330 ✭✭✭

How about the opc pack and 1 of the Topps ?

  • balco758balco758 Posts: 1,397 ✭✭✭✭✭

    Coinspack has a good idea.

The 9 can prob fetch 600-700.

Tim you are right re the likely slew of 90/10’s

Do cello packs generate better results than rack packs in terms of the condition of the cards?

  • balco758balco758 Posts: 1,397 ✭✭✭✭✭

    Tim knows best.......

lots of variables (year, grade, gym), but I’ve have most luck with wax.

  • ArtVandelayArtVandelay Posts: 701 ✭✭✭✭

If so, maybe consider selling one of the 75 cello packs and get 4 PSA 7 wax packs from 1975.

I don’t see why you can’t open all of them and save us from this indecision.

Thanks guys. Gonna sleep in it and decide tomorrow. It’s big decision.

No, rack packs are better (the best) source for mint cards. In general, for 1970s unopened, it's rack, wax and cello in order from best to worst.

Decided to rip the Topps cello. Will get the pics rolling later this am. Need to review how to crack open the pack slab.

  • balco758balco758 Posts: 1,397 ✭✭✭✭✭

    Here were the contenders.

Eliminated the Robinson and the OPC 1st. Chose the Mangual as the back centering was poor.

  • balco758balco758 Posts: 1,397 ✭✭✭✭✭

Some pics of the crack in case in helps others.

    Wasn’t too difficult.

centering was rough on this pack. also no stars that sucks. thank you for sharing.

Thanks for sharing! I really liked the suggestion of selling PSA9 packs for multiple 7s to rip.

But that takes time and this was a spontaneous decision!

Tough pack. Thanks for being brave enough to crack it and post them.

  • balco758balco758 Posts: 1,397 ✭✭✭✭✭

I looked at prices for 9s and 7s and don’t see any way I was going to trade the 9 for more than 2 7’s. It was fun and cost me $300 to once again learn these packs are best left sealed!

The value spread between PSA 7 and PSA 9 75 cellos is not incredibly significant, probably $400 for the former and $550 for the latter.

  • That's a heartbreaker! Same kinda luck I would have.

Thanks for sharing and you have more willpower than I! After a bad pack I want to open more to see if I can do better.

  • balco758balco758 Posts: 1,397 ✭✭✭✭✭

Lol. Oh I want to rip more. But I now realize unless you want to rip a box it’s a total crap shoot.
