4/1 Over, properly, underpriced. 1971 Munson PSA 8 @ $1900. Verdict: overpriced

This one comes in from the request line. Two recent sales with quite a discrepancy in price. This is about the average.

Standard disclaimer:

Classifications

Overpriced-given the player, set, condition, etc. this card is currently selling for higher than you would expect. You would sell at the current price.

Properly priced- same thing, with your feeling that you would buy or sell a this price and feel comfortable.

Under priced- again same and you would buy at the current price.

To keep the discussion light and not getting bogged down by definitions, just think of the stated PSA standards of each grade, not a specific card for sale or recently sold. I’m also not looking at pop reports.

I don’t have VCP access, so I’ll just list the card and the average of the last two eBay sales.

Feel free to send me a PM if you want a particular card thrown out for discussion.

Overpriced.... Sure, low pop card and Yankee great but not a HOF card, Rookie or even SP. IMO not worth 2 and a half to 3 times the better HOF players in set. I tend to steer away from 71's, 63's and 62's when submitting.....

Under! (I own one biased). It was a hotter card when there were under 20 in PSA 8 - ~10 years ago. Still a top 3-5 card from the 1970s and not realistic opportunities to get 8.5 or 9s without dropping a tank of green.

IMO grading for 1971 Topps has gotten much stricter. One full grade.
No card probably ever show the defects like these black borders. Even some psa 8's might show some kind of border/corner problem. Those that show nice edges and crisp black color are in high demand and get decent prices.
    Munson in PSA 8 is a pop 124. 4 psa 9's and no 10's.
A psa 9 is around $20K and PSA 8.5 around $5K so an 8 is the most "affordable" for many of us collectors.
The 1971 Topps set is very popular and so is Munson. He is beloved by baseball fans HOFer or not. Roger Maris is similar. He has cards priced like he is a HOFer.

Probstein recently had 3 1971 Munson's. One at a start price 0f $1795 is not centered and has white defects and is still on. IMO that is not a decent price.
Another was listed as "looks Mint" and was very nice and high end. Minimal white and centered. It finished at $2214
I was bidding at $2050 and lost.
A third was almost as nice and I was high bidder at $1625. Very glad to get that nice of a card at that price.

Here is my 8. Centered. Have thought about sending in for possible bump but the top right smudge will hurt.

Overpriced. Non hall of famer, non-rookie card. I suppose Yankee fans drive this card up in price and the fact he died in a plane crash. I collect 71's, but consider this card non-essential.

    Terry Bradshaw was AMAZING!!

    Ignore list -Basebal21

I agree it is overpriced as he is not a HOF and it is not his rookie card. However, there are a lot of collectors that collect all the cup cards so need it, Yankee collectors need it, and it is one of the best looking cards ever produced. Still, it makes no sense to me that it sells for more than the Blyleven rookie.

This is a tough one. I think it is a touch overpriced; but only by a little. It will never consistently sell for under $1500. Just a super popular card.

Centering seems to put it past Blyleven since he doesn't suffer from it like Munson does.
