Looks like the main difference between the small and large date is the width of the 4.

Definately a major difference in the mint marks.
The 1934 Buffalo has two different size Mint Marks for the "D" Denver Mint issue. I guess it is a common practice to use whatever punch is available at the time some may be slightly different than others.
