Remember this coin ? Rubberband kept it from grading higher .

SURPRISINGLY this coin turned out to be the highest graded for the date at either PCGS or NGC !!
DNB says this coin is "scarcer" in uncirculated than other dates of this period.

I see this one about where it graded. I think the feel good story about this coin is that it was assigned a grade with the band mark LOL. That was your original concern

Common but a top pop at PCGS.... one better at NGC.

NCSUWOLF74 pointed out to me that the below is a variety 1870 FR/YF .
It matches Morten and Eden description but apparently PCGS missed it !
And so did I.........!!!!!

When I added the above coin ( 6 star variety ) to my registry PCGS indicated I had “updated” and eliminated the 5 star variety . A real beauty as well .

These are some nice coins!
@bidask - out of total ignorance about this series - what are you going for? Date run, date and mint, date and mint and assayer (are they the assayers or minters??)
And how hard is this to do? Is it like assembling a set of Morgan dollars? Or way harder? Thanks in advance.
My current "Box of 20"
There 1105 coins in the registry .... oh boy ! ( I’m shooting for the stars )
I have completed maybe 22% so far
Including what I still need to cross from NGC
Registry : Collection from the West
Very hard .... Virtually impossible .
Is it like assembling a set of Morgan dollars? Or way harder?
Yes way harder
Thanks in advance.
Your welcome .

@bidask I never thought on comparing them with Morgans. It has to be 100 times harder...
@bidask has been training for this project all his life. Game on!

Makes bust halves by Overton number look like child’s play! Wow.
My current "Box of 20"
There are several coins in which there are but one known (eg. 1870-ZsYH), several others that are very rare (eg. 1866-CaFP), and still others that are extremely rare (eg. 1827-PiSA).
I can tell you with absolute certainty that you will never complete the set. Nobody ever has. (Perhaps JB Parker completed the set. But I heard statements to the contrary, so I’m not sure.)
But you will absolutely have fun trying. And you should!
Oh man I get some really decent grades on my second batch of some really rare cap&rays 8 R

Congrats! It’s been fun to watch as you unveil them. Do the grading results make you wish you had been more aggressive with bidding, or did you generally get the ones you needed?
Thank you .
I need a total of 1105 coins .🤪
I know I was complaining with the competion I had at the Morten Eden auction in London ( bidding against specialist dealers in the same room)
But now wish I had bid stronger than I had
........which was originally very strong 🤨
May not ever get a chance again to do so for some of those dates .

At the time of this auction I was not fully aware of the collector behind the sale of the Mexican Morten and Eden sale November 2019.
Recently ( like in the last couple days ) over a few glasses of wine Mr Eureka confirmed they belonged to none
other than :

Absolutely!

I have several coins from the sale, but none of my envelopes have his name.
Neither did mine .....the envelope shown is from another purchase not Morten & Eden sale.....but I trust Mr Eureka knows
what he is talking about..... afterall he's a coinhound

How could you not know? All those coins in the sale that said plate coins in the Hookneck book, of which he was co-author. I thought that was a dead giveaway!
I did not connect the dots .

I lucked out because I was there in person to judge for myself ( with the help of Mr Eureka ) conditions/grades of the mostly raw coins that were auctioned.
I am thinking lots of bidders online may not have participated as much because many of the coins were raw and some had problems.

Outrageous

Never even thought about it. But makes sense. Not just the Hooknecks but also the insane quality of the coins. I am sure took him a century (literally) to collect them. That being the case, I am glad that he was able to see the success of the sale.
Another giveaway, though less obvious, was the fact that many of the coins were bought in the 1960s (and I think a few may have been purchased in the 1950s), per the auction notes. Who else would have such a nice collection (and still holding) from way back then?
