When did PCGS start grading World?

When did PCGS start grading world coins? Did they start accepting everything right away, or did they do a roll out by country? I wasn't collecting back then, but am curious.

Good question. I believe this was an evolutionary process that was completed over time. And even within certain countries, it was completed over time. As an example, think of all the coins from the German States and Italian States... the expertise needed to undertake such an endeavor as to grading coins minted for centuries requires planning. As for the time table of all countries... I have no recollection as to how that unfolded, but I suspect it was more of a country and even by countries approach. I should make an effort to go back and look at my PCGS submissions. And even if I did that, it likely would not be accurate because that would not likely be reflective of when that service first became available. And to further complicate this, initially collectors submitted through dealers back in the day. I doubt this helps, but at least it provides a somewhat of a context to the question.

I wasn't sure. I collect German coins and I see some in the old green holders every now and then, which is 1998 or earlier. It seems like submissions really picked up somewhere between 2010-2015.

I recall people saying that NGC started doing world a few years before PCGS.

Not sure when they started to grade World stuff, but perhaps looking at world coins in different generation holders could help. I've seen and 8 Reales in a doily holder before. Not sure what years those were used. As far as registry goes, Mexico 8 Reales sets went up after a bit of back and forth with BJ and the registry team in February of 2012. Also coincided with NGC discontinuing PCGS coins in their registry sets.

I did not choose to bring NGC into the discussion mainly because they were not part of the question. I believe ANACS and NGC were ahead in the World market grading curve if you look back 20-30 years.

Mexico in general was graded by PCGS well before 2012

Updated my post. I did see an 8 Reales in a doily before. What years were those produced?

That would be rare... Very rare even if it was a common date 8R. I will leave the exact date or time frame to the so-called slab experts but my recollection puts this back in the 1989 time frame and even slightly earlier

I stand corrected. It was a Canadian dollar, not an 8 reales.
