William McGregor Paxton - The Album

This painting was on the cover of American Art Review magazine this month. Painted in 1913, it's called "The Album." It would appear a type of coin album, but that may be because I'm blinded from seeing any other type of album. Were there such albums in 1913, or is this probably only a photo album with small, round photos? The original Kodak camera (1888) produced round photos, but they were much bigger than what is seen here.

I suspect it is an album for photos such as would have been inserted into various types of small jewelry items that were popular in the era depicted. I doubt if it has anything to do with coins, especially since the person in the painting is a young woman.
It would not have been for the round Kodak photos, which, as you said, would have been too large.
Interesting painting! Love Paxton's paintings - there was a recently completed exhibition in Memphis and Ohio of some of his best paintings, but I don't recall seeing any that were coin related.
Thanks for posting!
The woman has a collection of the "love tokens" given to her.
