A couple of gold NEWPS

As mentioned prior I whittled down my silver collection and have been laser focused on 18th and 19th century gold and medals.

I’m putting together 3 different gold type sets and I’m having the time of my life doing it.

This $5 1804 Heraldic eagle type 2 tickled a few of my fancies. While not remotely iconic as a 55/55 Lincoln it is one of the most visually dramatic “varieties” old gold has to offer in the form of the prepunched “8”. It pairs nicely with my $5 type one 1795 small eagle.

1804 BD-7 R-4

The second new purchase is a $1 type 2. I decided to go with a 1855-0 . These often come monkied with and unmolested examples don’t come up that often especially uncirculated. Branch mint type 2’s are very spicy in my opinion.

    Absolutely spectacular!

I think early date gold coins are the very best!

I was surprised though to see three coins instead of two.

Yes I edited out the 1795 as it was a prior purchase and confusing

    Thank you

I like them both but, especially, the 1804 re-punched 8 half eagle in the old green holder. That one has some swagger. B)

Holy chit, where do I begin:
    1795 is incredible, period!
    1804 is wonderful!
The 1855-o is very interesting, what is with the 8 in 1855?

It’s the way they almost always come. Same with the LL in “dollar”. Weakly struck central reverse in all cases. Highest graded is a 64.

Very nice gold, much nicer than any gold piece I will ever own. Congratulations!

Those ugly hologram stickers really do distract away from the beauty of the coins though. Goo Gone does work wonders. Regards!

Great coins but why a O mint type II gold dollar ?

    Glad you asked. Great question.

They are more saucy then P mint issues. P mint type 2’s are plentiful compared to branch mints. In my opinion P mints are over priced. Figure 35K for a 65 CAC. There are about 140 PCGS 1854/ 55 type 2 P mint 65’s and higher. For the 1855- 0 there are only 27 coins graded 62-64. None higher. There are mostly stripped out examples out there. I’m really trying to spice up one of my type sets with interesting dates and mint marks

It’s the last 0 mint dollar which makes it popular with gold dollar collectors

It’s the only 0 mint type 2 dollar which makes it popular as a one year type

They are very scarce in properly graded mint state grades.

They are the best struck brand mint type 2 dollars and had the best planchets compared to its fellow southern brethren.

I was told that whenever you see a properly graded mint state 1855-o $1 you should try and buy it. They rarely come up for sell. Honest examples are rarer then hens teeth

I’ll probably never have a top ranked gold set but I’m aiming to put together three of the most interesting constructed sets. At least to me.

I love the way you think. It’s the same reason I put a 51-O 3CS in my type set. Type sets can be interesting and immensely enjoyable without being top ranked.

Still, that 1795 Sm eagle........ WOW! Nice look.

With respect to the type II gold dollar....... I'll just give this advice. If you think you might ever want a nice one, and you ever see a nice one, just buy it. They are not so easy to find. This goes for any issue, not just the 55-O. :) This particular example is my kind of 62. Really, really nice.

    Beautiful.

But-- no biggie: That RPD the 8/8 looks more like an 8/ Large 8

    Or, I need new glasses

Both are very nice! But being a gold dollar collector, I really like the 55-O. It has a great strike for a T2, which is tough to find.
I just bought this AU55. No where near the detail of yours.

According to the guy who wrote the books this is a BD-4 recut normal 8
