COPIA (beneath the bust) is Italian for "copy"

    Yep, a copy.

Some kind of copy, yes. Extremely close in design and size to the official 50 francs gold coin of France issued between 1862 and 1868.

From 1855 to 1859, there was a similar 50 francs gold coin but the Emperor's head was bare and a touch smaller - there no laurel wreath in his hair on the earlier official coin.

There were no stars on either side of the date on the official 50 francs gold. On the official coins, there was a Mintmark on the left side and an anchor lying sideways (engraver general's personal mark) on the right.

The 50 francs gold was an oddity when first minted in 1855.

I suspect that any eBay sale at a high price was a fluke or a hoax. You can always attempt to sell yours on eBay to see if you get lucky.
