Can ANY1 help? computer problem

I have no clue what’s going on with my computer.
It is having problems like this:
After I get connected, the connection is like 3 times as slow as normal

After so long after I’m connected, and I click or type for another website, it wont bring the page up, saying its like “page cannot be displayed” or “error”
(That is my main problem)… my longest time I’ve been connected during these problems is 25 or so minutes

Even when I’m not connected to the internet, sometimes my computer freezes up, or goes very slow, like my Windows 98 takes forever to load something

I’m using:
Windows 98
Compaq computer
56 K Modem

I deleted files of this to see if it would make it work right, but it didn’t do anything:
Temporary Internet Files
Cookies
Some of my games I had installed, like NBA Live 2001, I think I took 3 games out

So I had to type this offline, so when I get connected, I will copy and paste this message and see if:
CAN ANYONE HELP ME OUT THAT KNOWS WHAT COULD BE WRONG?

IT MIGHT BE A VIRUS, BECAUSE I GOT LIKE 5 DIFFERENT EMAILS WITH THE TITLE OF: CARDS FOR TRADELIST
AND I OPENED THE EMAILS AND IT SAID TO DOWNLOAD A LIST OR SOMETHING?

IS IT MY SERVER?

IT COULD BE MY MSN MESSENGER, OR MAYBE YAHOO MESSENGER?

I MIGHT NOT ANSWER ANY MESSAGES OR POST BECAUSE OF THESE PROBLEMS

yes... got about 3 of those... and I tried to download and open one
now I need to know the name of that file to get rid of it... any help?

Sounds like a trojan or a virus. I would do a search of the last couple of days and look at the files that have been opened recently. MAybe you will get lucky and find it. If not go to a local best buy or computer shop and have them do a virus scan of it. Or install virus software on it and do it yourself

Goto Start...Run....type in "winipcfg"...if theres no number under "IP Address"...you not connecting to the internet....

If you tried to down load one of the emails with the virus you got it.Once you start the down load it opens the virus.

format your hard drive means delte everything off your harddrive and start all over again..from scratch......have to install EVERYTHING again!! sucks....if a virus scan can t fix it...u probably hafta format!!!

I don't think it's a virus. That's how my pc was earlier this year, go to my computer, under c drive and see hw much space you have left. Mine was nearly full, I deleted everything that I didn't use and now my pc is fine.

If you have norton antivirus or some antin firus software... run a full system scan and see if it finds a virus and then delete it.

you might try defragmenting it takes all the bits and puts them in the right place. I defrag about once a month. You could have what is called Nod overload, thats when you have to many people on your server, I live in a new add. and when I first got MSN they would put every one on one server and slow everything down, also when the server was full if someone came on then it would kick someone off. I use to have to go get back on after 15 min. Try to defragment first, go to Programs-Accessories-System tools-Defragment. You might have a virus but try this first.

I ran a virus check, McAfee Virus Scan
through the C drive
and found nothing

THATS WHY I NEED THE FILE NAME OF THE VIRUS

Look, how are we supposed to know the file name of the virus YOU downloaded?!?
You can run a virus scan, but have you updated the programs virus list lately? If its old, its not going to show up.

true... but some1 on here may have gotten that virus and got rid of it
And it did say I dont have the updated virus scan... but heck, that cost $50 dollars

so I think I'm gonna reformat the cpu

I work Tech Support for Microsoft. Try these steps:

1. Check your system resources. Right click My Computer/ Properties/ Performance or Advanced (it's been a few years since I've used Win98). Check to see what % of free resources your system has. It should be above 70%.
2. Right click My Computer. On the opening screen, how much RAM do you have??
3. Who's your ISP?? AOL? Compuserve? Local dial-up company?
4. Take notice of the connection speed you get when you connect to your ISP. Did it drop?? What number is at??
5. Go to Housecall Free Online Virus Scan. This scan is up to date and should detect any virus an old virus scanner didn't.
6. What kind of computer do you have??

Final Steps.
7. Backup all your data (documents, movies, pictures, music, etc.) to an external drive, second hard drive, or removable media.
8. If you have an OEM ( Original Equipment Manufacturer ) such as ( Compaq, Dell, HP, Sony, etc...) run your provided Windows 98 Recovery Disk. Make sure to select format and recover when it prompts you. This will completely wipe out the hard drive and reinstall a fresh, new copy of Windows 98. If you still have the issue after doing that then it's your ISP or your phone lines.
