eBay cancellation - polite email - interesting outcome

jmlanzafjmlanzaf Posts: 34,755 ✭✭✭✭✭

This has happened twice to me this month. I think it's probably eBay bucks or something. But I had a buyer ask to cancel a transaction because "I used the wrong payment method" but she still wanted to buy it. The first time, I just ate the couple bucks in PayPal fees and accommodated the buyer. This time, it kind of bugged me because I was selling a President Obama coin set with decals. It was $2 face value that I was selling for $2.99 + shipping. So, after fees, I was only getting 30 cents over face value.

So....I responded back to the buyer and said that I was happy to accommodate her request but, in case she didn't know, I was going to have to eat the PayPal fees on her 1st transaction.

She asked how much the fees were.

I said "48 cents"

She said, "if you can add it to the bill, I'll pay the 48 cents"

So, I canceled the transaction, relisted it for $3.47 and she promptly bought it and paid again.

This is why I love eBay. 99.9% of all transactions are just awesome. You just have to ignore the 1 in a 1000 that has a problem.

There are considerate buyers out there.

Almost all of the sellers i have dealt with have been cool. I paid 400 for an ase 2008 rev 2007 in December. Coin gets here and what looked like a small lightening bolt scratch on the plastic turn out to be on the coin as I could not feel it on the plastic and did not want to open up the case and handle the coin. I called the dealer after seeking advice here and told him what I was seeing. At first he was pissy but I told him I would overnight it back to him on me so he did not have to eat shipping back. I then initiated return. He called me two days later to say it was lint on the inside of the mint case. I told him to take new pics relist and I will buy it now. Never came back on eBay so I guess he sold it in store.

100% positive transactions with SurfinxHI, bigole, 1madman, collectorcoins, proofmorgan, Luke Marshall, silver pop, golden egg, point five zero,coin22lover, alohagary, blaircountycoin,joebb21

I agree with both of you, I have found most buyers and sellers on eBay are decent people. If you give someone a chance to make things right they usually do.

I sold a 1902o NGC MS65 to a gentleman down in Florida, a few days later he sends me a message stating I sent him a 1892o MS64 😟Big difference in price, he said he liked it so much he wanted to buy it and asked the price.. Sold it to him for $600

Another Time I Bought a 1883 NC MS65 Nickel from a seller and he sent me a 1879CC AU50 on accident, I contacted him immediately about the error.. He was shocked that I message him as notified him about the error as he had mailed a bunch of coins out recently and the other buyers were in the same boat as I was. Ended up paying him $1200 for the CC and got the 1883 Nickel as Well

Do you sell many Obama coin sets?

Lol. No. I had 4 of them that came with a collection. Since I had 4 of them and you often have to scrape the decal off to get the coinstar to take them, I lifted them.

I wonder if everyone would have been so accommodating if it was a $2000.00 transaction.

Oh, I'm sure the $60 fee would have been more of an issue. Although then, maybe, they are willing to stick with their original form of payment. I didn't ask, but I assume the issue was over something secondary: eBay bucks, CC bonus or something. It may or may not have been worth $60 to them.

But I didn't even ask her to cover the fee. I just made her aware of it. The suggestion was hers.

I suspect the 'wrong payment method' error for buyers may be due to overdraft fees. There is nothing more frustrating after buying something for $5 and then having your bank ding you $35-$50 because it took you in negative balance or over limit.

Nice outcome for both sides, but how is it worth bothering with $3 transactions?

LOL. I never said it was. But that $2-$5 stuff builds up if you don't try to move it every now and then.

Forget the $3 transactions. Ask me how many I do that are UNDER $2!!! LOL

In 2017, I had 1400 transactions of under $2 (plus $3 shipping, of course)

I have pared that down to only about 300 in 2019.

A friend sold stamps on Ebay. Plenty of cheap sales. I asked if why he did it and he said that it kept him away from the horse track.

    Not a bad answer.
