I consider myself a numismatist. I enjoy learning about the history behind the items I collect. In addition to collecting, I conduct research and have written articles that have appeared in a couple hobby publications.

I'll add several hundred members of CU to that list!

    That is kind. :)

Kind and realistic. Any member here, even if they arrived green, after a couple years of regularly following and contributing to posts, is indeed a Numismatist.

Among their forum peers, particularly those with encyclopedic coin knowledge, they may feel to be only modestly informed, but with the 99.5% of folks that are not coin people, they are experts.

Is it possible to a Numismatist yet not collect coins? Simply study them without gathering them?

Absolutely. Ownership isn’t a requirement in my opinion.

Certainly. Roger is a numismatist who doesn't collect coins. He does gather coins for study, either by borrowing them or temporarily buying them but only for the duration of a research project.

Walter Breen was a collector when he was younger. His collection was stolen and he stopped collecting coins and became a collector of information as he put it. He was a numismatist but not a coin collector.

I suppose numismatist is an easier sell than son of rocket scientist... Fewer syllables too.

Experience the World through Numismatics...it's more than you can imagine.
