1980 Topps BKB packs received with grades

Submitted theses packs which we did on the board break from a couple of boxes, and subbed them at the National. Results were pretty decent and love the pack holders - these things are like bricks.

Very nice KC. I have a couple of packs from that break as well sitting at PSA right now. Good to see 8's and 9's. Congrats.

    Nice grades, KC!

I only got a couple packs from that break and they both came back 8's. Personally I can't tell the difference between a 7, 8 or 9 in the 80 basketball packs! Awesome to see that 9 though!!

I thought they did away with the four-prong interior slab for packs? When did they bring it back and do they only use it for some issues or for all?

They are using these for all packs now with the feet on the back of the holders, at least they have over my last few subs. These holders seem to do a better job at preventing damage from the gum in transit, too.

I’m confused. I thought the reason they went away from this style holder and to the pure rectangular one was that it reduced the chance of gum tears.

@grote15 Is this holder somehow different than the current ones?

Thanks for the note fellas. To be honest I can’t tell the difference between the 8’s and the 9 pack. Price wise I am seeing the 8’s go for $250-275 and 9’s at $400 ish. Does that sound about right?

The difference is in the well inside the holder, not the four-prong design.

The latest holders seem to do a better job at limiting movement of gum inside the pack. I have not had any significant issues with wrapper tears from gum over my past few subs.

Yes, that is an older holder, graded about 10 years ago.

This is the latest holder, looks similar in design but it is definitely different from the one pictured above (and gum is loose in these packs).

@grote15 Tim, the ‘77s above seem to have the design where there are four prongs but also a rectangular inner well. Whereas KC’s basketball packs don’t have the rectangular inner well. Isn’t that right?

I think it's more of an optical illusion with scan vs pic.

    Here's another one, just back.

The 77 OPCs sure look like they have a rectangular inner well to me. The 72s do not.

Trust me, it's not. I'm holding the pack in my hand, LOL..

This is an example of a holder with the rectangular well you are referring to. The other difference with this holder is that it doesn't have the four plastic feet at each corner on back.

When I start my 70’s pack run again I will be calling you for a 72 pack Tim 😉

I think I'm more confused now than I was before. I do like the slabs those '77s are in though. If there's just the tiniest bit of curling at the top and/or bottom it would prevent the gum from reaching the edges which would obviously prevent it from causing a tear.

But Tim sounds happy so I'll trust his judgment in this.

The redesign of the well within the holder is definitely an improvement in that regard.
