1967 NCS Alaska Centennial Silver Medal Seward / Totem by Anargyros NCS-38

Ever wish you could post a BST item in the regular coin forum?

1967 The Alaskan Centennial Coin / Medal Sterling Silver Proof by the National Commemorative Society
Sculptured by Spyro Anargyros

A bold mid-century radical departure from classical medal design. Anargyros creates an expressionist portrait of William H. Seward that is almost Van Gogh-like in execution, suggesting the ruggedness of the Alaskan frontier in the lines of Seward's rough face. You could argue that Anargyros' medal #38 is the best (certainly the most striking) of the 150 medals in the original fabled NCS collection. Wonderful depiction of Alaska's past and future on the reverse as well, with radar installations contrasted by the Totem Bight clan house in Ketchikan.

Stunning deep cameo black and white, with highly frosted devices and deep mirror fields. Is it hyperbole to say that it's likely one of the finest surviving examples of this 50+ year old extremely limited edition? With an original mintage of just 5292 and the hindsight of a dozen mass meltings since the 1960s, I'd wager it is. Especially when you include the metal ID tag which accompanied this medal in the original NCS box.
