A one-of-a-kind 1956 Topps Mickey Mantle

I just wanted to share a crazy art project that I recently finished: a 21" x 30" 1956 Topps Mickey Mantle... Made entirely from cut up 1956 Topps baseball cards! This was a commission and the buyer supplied the cards. While it's hard to feel good about cutting up vintage cards, I can rest assured knowing that these cards will still be enjoyed, just in a different form.

Nice work!
Curious ....what was the condition of the cards you cut up? Everything was a 1? Where there 3s and 4s in there?
Superbly done! Must've been tough to get the background just right.
How many cards did it take?
Thanks, about 600 total and all were low grade - creased, marked, severely worn, etc.
This forum NEVER ceases to amaze me!
That is really, really cool.

I thought Carroll might have done a 56 Mantle, but it looks like he has not. Would have been curious to see how the two matched up, as I suspect unless he (or anyone in their right mind) was commissioned to do it, he would have used junk era commons.
Great piece.
Tim's work is what inspired me to start making artwork from cut cards, and I don't believe he has done a '56 Mantle. I remember seeing him comment in one of the forums that he has no interest in cutting up vintage cards... I suppose if I had a wait list as long as his I might have turned down this commission, but it ended up being a very interesting and unique challenge.
