NCAA vs. NFL Officiating and Replay.

Is it possible to have a rational discussion about the Officiating and Replay in both the NCAA and the NFL??

I have watched both NCAA Football and the NFL for decades, attending games in the 60's and 70's and watching on TV since the mid-60's. Certainly there are rule differences but it seems that the NCAA currently does a better job of calling and not calling penalties. The flow of the games seems unimpeded by flag after flag after flag, but they still seem to call penalties when they should and players rarely complain. Add to that the replay system. It seems less complicated than the NFL but the Officials always tend to get the call right. I find myself in near total agreement even when the call is against the Team I'm rooting for.

The NFL is a totally different story. Penalties seem to be called on a whim, left to the judgement of an Official and agreed to by the announcers. Some are gifts, some come across as "payback" for a previous bad call and some just seem to be called repeatedly against certain Teams in some games. It isn't unusual to see a Team flagged 10-15 times in a game while the opponent has maybe 3-4 penalties. In the last game between Baltimore and New England it seemed as though the Patriots were suddenly one of the most undisciplined Team in the NFL, flag after flag fell against them. It is hard to know what to think sometimes when penalties are repeatedly called against some Teams at crucial times in game after game.

Replay in the NFL is almost to the point where it is useless. The cynic in mean believes that the NFL wants to deny every challenge that Coaches request and there is a an almost universal tendency for Headquarters to either not review some obvious plays or not reverse some bad on-field calls.

What do you think??

I think they get most of them right now, but still get some wrong after replay. Sometimes it's hard to tell even on replay. Especially on spotting the ball with a pile of players in the way.

NCAA replay system is light years ahead of the NFL.

Yes, college games flow. The refs seem to let the players play and the penalties called seem obvious.

NFL games grind to a crawl with the constant flags.
Holding and pass interference constantly called and seem so inconsistent.
I wait after every single play for a penalty. It gets unbearable.

NFL players could not play at the pace of an NCAA game

At least now we're all clear on what tripping is. :/

is this a serious question? no league should ever in a million years be compared to the NFL, which has made a mockery of the rules

if i never again see a wide receiver raped in the secondary only for the no-call to be upheld upon review, it'll be far too soon

here's a very recent example..........7 tripping calls in 190 NFL games this season, then 2 extremely dubious ones in a single game?

and have we already forgotten about the zebras single-handedly putting an undeserving team in the Super Bowl?

    it's a joke, straight up.

talk radio here thinks pre game Billy boy complained to the refs about Dallas tripping incidents

    et voila !

Last night's game shows why we need instant replay. Two turnovers were reversed. Both were pretty obvious bad calls.

sometimes I think having instant replay allows the officials to make bad calls because things will be reviewed. the problem still is that the reviews take so long. in a game I watched Sunday, there was an a pass caught in the end zone and ruled a TD while there was also a flag thrown for defensive PI. as soon as the play was over they showed a different camera angle that sorted out both things withing 30 seconds, it was clearly a catch for a TD and clearly PI.

it took them about 4-5 minutes to sort things out.

I tend to agree. Probably means we need some better officials.

Bud Grant called for the NFL to hire permanent officials over 50 years ago. This might help.

The sponsors don't want this though, they need longer games for more commercials.
