Why? this is all legal by the rules. The registry is really nothing more than a place to keep track of your coins. It is advertised as the finest sets (which everyone knows is a joke), everytime you turn around now, a new top set shows up and even then so many top coins are not in PCGS holders. Everytime someone lists a set, just to get a higher sale price (all of which is fine) it just lowers the value of registry a little more. Pretty soon it will just be a place to sell your coins (something it is already well on its way to).

Ironically, as this keeps going on, it will diminish the drive in some to build top sets, and could actually hurt prices.

I just think of it as a list of registered sets of coins that are in PCGS holders. Nothing more, and nothing less.

Im stating to think the Registry is a joke. Its the dealers who think they can control the public.. but its the collector who determines the fair market price for a coin. The Registry is just a place to list coins to drive prices up.. And has done a spectacular job in doing so.

Their are very many coins that will not end up listed in the Registry that have been in collections for years. The Registry is a way to list plastic PCGS coins.. nothing more.

Whitewashqtr, I wouldn't call it a joke, but recognizing what it is, a terrific marketing ploy and a place to show off nice sets. Look at how many dealers make a living at selling mostly registry coins. Nothing wrong with this as long as you realize what a premium you are paying for something made out of the same material as toothbrushes. image

One more rule: modern proof sets that are all designated PF69 DCAM can never be resold, they must be donated to the Smithsonian Museum.

I guess youre right .. Blinded by my own ambition. My mother taught me to "play fair". I guess the Registry is not the case for that with some people.

  • I think we all want to be associated with a class act. Naturally PCGS will do whatever they think is best. I can't see them letting the Registry turn into and advertising forum. If that happens it actually might be the best thing that ever happened to the NGC Registry.
