Now that's wealth!
Decent Wikipedia article too on this Hoard. Appears it was NOT found with modern metal detectors.
1237 gold coins plus nine pieces of jewelry ... that was a LOT of money in 1464! I'll bet the individuals who buried the hoard didn't live much longer after doing so.
As you can tell from my moniker, i am a bit familiar with this conflict.
The name “War of the Roses” came from the fact that the lines, and now the counties named for them, Yorkshire and Lancashire, are represented by roses : White for York and Red for Lancaster.
My loyalty lies with the White rose of Yorkshire!!
Fascinating history and simply an incredible photo. Where is the hoard displayed?

The BM did not get the entire hoard. Many pieces are in collectors’ hands.
Doggedly collecting coins of the Central American Republic.
Visit the Society of US Pattern Collectors at USPatterns.com.
Hoards are most fascinating for a study of what was still circulating at a given time. Can you imagine going through that looking for different mints, die varieties etc?
On display in the coin room at the BM is a Vigo 1703 five guineas in UNC, a magnificent coin. Also, William Wyon's Janvier reducing machine. Was there in September. Neat place.
The display at the old mint site at the Tower has a Simon Petition crown on display.

I was at the British Museum on 26 & 29 May of this year, and oddly I felt there was much less gold coin on display in the HSBC numismatic gallery than there had been when I was last there in April 2010. Nor does my memory include this Fishpool Hoard! But I did see a significant portion of the Hoxne Hoard, which somehow I had not seen in the past. But that is not in numismatic gallery, but is around the corner a short distance away. The British Museum has done a good job of interspersing appropriate coinage selections among other Roman antiquities. The British Museum is an overwhelming treasure house!
P.S. I learned two thing by internet search. Apparently, the HSBC name has recently been dropped in favor of 'The Citi Gallery'. Also, Room 40 with the Fishpool Hoard appears to be the exact opposite direction from the main Numismatic Gallery and the Roman Galleries. Perhaps that is why I have never seen it!
The Fishpool Hoard is in the same room with the Sutton Hoo finds, as I recall.

Well, I now know that I will do the second floor differently next time I visit the British Museum.
That probably won't happen before 2021. London is quite exciting, but it is pricey!
