Several of the most gorgeous U.S. coin designs have been brought back in recent years (buffalo nickel, walking liberty half, standing liberty quarter, mercury dime, St. Gaudens double eagle, Morgan dollar). I was excited about each of them, but I would like to see a different approach. Bring back the initial year of certain coins in a different metal so that it would be easy to distinguish restrikes from originals (no need to modify the design or stamp in the word "replica"), and mint them to the same specs as the originals. Don't make them sterilized versions of the originals in the way, for example, the St. Gaudens bullion coins look fake compared to the original St. Gaudens double eagles. I would love to see the 1913 Type 1 buffalo nickel produced in 90% silver. I would prefer to have them produced in the same way as the business strike coins, but with "hammered" strikes from good dies (but not proof dies). Do the same for the 1909-S VDB Lincoln cent. Do both of these coins in the original size. I would bet that there would be a good demand for these coins, and they would be easy to afford for any collector. It would be harder for the silver coins, which would need to be upgraded to gold. They essentially did this for the mercury dime, standing liberty quarter, and walking liberty half, but these products came out with a sterile look rather than the appearance of a coin fresh from the mint 100 years earlier. I would prefer that they had done it without modifying the size, retaining the denominations, and producing restrikes from 1916. These would be less affordable, but perhaps there is some other metal that is more affordable, has a nice appearance, is sufficiently malleable for a good strike, and would be easily recognizable as a restrike. Another possibility would be to downgrade some of the gold coins of that era to silver. I would jump at an opportunity to obtain restrikes of the St. Gaudens designs for the eagle and double eagle.
