Questions about submitting VAMS

When submitting a Morgan for Vam designation, Do you specify the Vam or let PCGS determine which they feel it is? I have a Long Nock 1878-s, not sure which Vam it is, considering all the "S" location variations. Thanks for your help!!

As far as I know, you specify the VAM number and they'll verify it. The easy ones to attribute are VAM 27 (bite taken out of the N in UNITED) and VAM 58 (thick spike on Liberty's eye). They are also two of the more common ones. If you can post clear pictures, I should be able to help you out.

Thanks Messy...I didnt know about the eye spikes...looks like it does have 3 spikes to the eye and a small die chip lower right of the "S" making it a VAM57
Glad you figured it out. How does it grade?

PCGS does have a 1878-S $1 VAM 57 Long Arrow Shaft (Regular Strike) listing as PCGS #: 133848. Is that one your VAM?

Do you have any images available of it?

Wow! Those are really tough in AU. The long nocks usually come in VF and lower. Does the obverse look like it would grade?
