Tom Watson almost (and, frankly, should have) won the British Open back in '09 at the ripe old age of 59. would have been the greatest achievement in the history of sports had it happened,
Not even close.
tell you what, give me your choice.........then i will objectively compare it to an almost 60-yr-old man winning a major championship against the world's greatest golfers. guys, mind you, who were anywhere from 15-40 years younger and hit the ball 40-50 yards farther off the tee & used 4-5 clubs less into greens on average. if you know anything about golf -- and i will give you the benefit of the doubt and say you do -- then no one needs to explain to you what a disadvantage Watson had on every single hole.............and still almost pulled off the unthinkable.
if you can even sniff that, i'll gladly tip my cap........but you won't be able to
Yes I know a little about golf. My dad loved to golf and I joined him often for a round. I hit the ball a lot farther than he did and he beat me every time, even into his late 50's because he had a very nice short game and was solid on the greens.
Watson was one of the all time greats, I just don't think him shooting 2 under for the Tournament is that great. I have heard of several older players who shoot a round under their age.
Too bad he didn't win. It would have been very special, but to say it would have been the greatest achievement in sports history is way too much. His first round 65 was pretty amazing.

Championships are won by teams, therefore the question is moot.
How many slugs have limped in to get a WS ring for having played a paltry # of games. There are however stars within each Championship series or Super Bowl game that are recognized by winning the MVP of the series or game.
Baseball was mentioned sort of as a sport whereby a great player doesn't have a discernible effect on the rest of the team.
Where was that mentioned? i don't see anything in this thread about great baseball players not having a discernible effect on the rest of the team.
Pitchers help their team batters as well. If you know your pitcher is going to hold the opponent down in runs, you can relax a bit more at the plate, and a relaxed batter usually hits better.
This is highly questionable, at best. What kind of hitter is thinking about their team's pitcher when they're at the plate?!?!

The winner also shot two under, the conditions were awful Friday through Sunday with winds and rain. Considering no one over 48 years old has ever won a Major (and that was over 50 years ago), extending that by 11 years would be insane. Still waiting for what would beat that ...

as for Tabe's contribution, if you want to think that a group of amateurs beating a group of pros (like an amateur besting a professional has never happen before?) is more impressive than a completely-past-his-prime, all-by-his-lonesome-except-for-his-looper old man coming within 8 feet of beating the world's best 150 golfers for one of the sport's most coveted trophies, then that's your prer gative.

Golf is unique because an "old man" can compete with younger players. Secondly, the bad weather conditions were in fact an advantage to Watson as those conditions "even the playing field" in golf. He shot an amazing first round and then played about at par, no one else could catch him. I wish he would have won.
To call it " the greatest achievement in the history of sports" is beyond preposterous. To call it " the greatest achievement in the history of golf" would have been realistic.
What's next? An old bowler rolling a 900 series gets nominated for the "greatest achievement in the history of sports"?

To call it " the greatest achievement in the history of sports" is beyond preposterous.
your first job is to go scroll up and read the list of names Watson trounced in that tournament. he beat Rory McIlroy (the best golfer on the planet right now) by 10 shots. some dude named Tiger Woods didn't even make the cut. a litany of other major winners didn't play the weekend either.
your next job is to come up with a better nomination. if Howe was the best you could come up with, you need to try much, much harder. and please do not consult tabe, because his was worse than yours.

Secondly if a 70+ year old man can shoot a round of golf UNDER his age, and it happens, I would say that proves an old man CAN compete with a young player. Watson's near-accomplishment was nice but, at the end of the day, his competition has no impact on his performance. Tiger can't make Watson miss a shot. That's how an old man is able to compete. In hockey, your opponent can literally stop you from doing things. Wildly different.
