I was thinking about sending in about 10 or so of my auto cards..

to get an auto grade. So, the card has already been graded, just want to add the "10" auto grade to each card. First, I think it costs $10 to do this, is that right? And second, do you believe this add's value to the card, if so how much? Thanks.

Work hard and you will succeed!!

Yes, it is $10. It is no guarantee you will receive a "10" for the auto grade...the graders will decide what it will receive. Personally, I do not think it adds value, maybe an argument if you get a "10" grade, but grading autographs is even more soe subjective than cards (IMO).

I have a card with no auto on it, should I send it in for grading?

Yes it’s $10. Likely they won’t all receive 10 auto grades, though probably some will. Hard to tell without looking. Value wise, it seems any auto grade less than a 10 can hurt the value. And this last part is only my opinion, but I don’t think even a 10 auto grade adds much value, if any. I know personally, I would pay a $0.00 premium for an auto grade of 10 vs an auto that’s “only” authentic.

I am curious if you feel similar about the card itself holdered as well? For instance, would you pay the same for a PSA 5 authentic auto as you would for a authentic card/authentic auto grade?

**I used PSA 5 as the example since the card should easily be detected as a 5 whether it is in a numbered holder or not.

No, I prefer numerical card grades whenever possible. Again, this is my opinion only, but I see auto grades as a gimmick. Either it’s signed or it’s not. Unless the auto is so faint it’s almost illegible, in which case I can determine that myself. I do see your point and I understand not everybody would agree with me, but that’s why I said in my first post that it’s only my opinion. For me and me alone, card grade yes, auto grade no.

Edit to add: my answer to your question is more complicated than that. For a vintage card, I’d want the PSA 5. For a 1990-present card, I wouldn’t touch a PSA 5 with a 20 foot pole.

What I don't think is opinion, what I'm pretty sure is fact, is that any auto grade less than 10 can hurt the card's resale value.... I think.

I actually figured that anyone who wouldn't grade an auto on a card would only do so to mask the fact that the auto has a low grade. No data to back this up, but I would expect that most non-numbered autos would score a low auto grade if they were ever assessed.

Joe, you should never grade a card, unless it's a magic card. For sports cards, please mail all of those to me. I will I/M you my address.

Yeah, I would request they add only a "10" auto grade, nothing less.

Speaking only for myself, I have subbed and have purchased many beautiful autos that might have 10’d. For many, many years, PSA didn’t offer a numerical grade for autos. And then for the past couple of years when it’s been an option, I’ve still elected not to, simply because I don’t like auto grades. Given the number of great looking “authentic” autos in “lighthouse” flips out there, I don’t think I’m alone in this. But like you, I have no data to back this up.

I just sent in my 89 Fleer Bill Ripken FF auto that a fellow board member helped us get a few months back. I really have no idea what I was doing so I just had them holder it either as authentic or not. I think it is just coming back in the blue flip as trading card - authentic, or whatever it is. I would rather have it in a flip showing that it's the 1989 Fleer FF card but I don't honestly care about a grade on the auto. The card itself was no better than a 9 so I didn't have that graded either. Seems like there are too many options.

PSA only does red labels these days. No more blue.

It went thru PSA/DNA...does that make a difference?

Nope. PSA did away with all blue labels I believe just under a year ago. Now instead of blue, they are red but still will say “trading card” unless you specify for the dual service with authenticates not only the auto but the card as well. Worth it IMO as I’m not a fan of simply the words “trading card”.

If the card is altered will PSA designate that on an "Authentic" card grade? I thought I remember reading that they won't designate it.
