Do you think that PCGS change the registry set rules?

PTVETTERPTVETTER Posts: 5,925 ✭✭✭✭✭

I was thinking about a rule that allows only 1 set per person in any one category
I was thinking that if 2 people tied up the top 6 spots that would not be a good idea
The registry set I believe help the hobby, but now If you have a LOT of money you could dominate anything.
Therefore the little guy gets left behind or out!

If I had the money to buy all the coins needed to dominate every registry set I wouldn't want anyone to know that.

If you want to play rich mans games you had better that the means, the little guy (by which I am referring to an average collector not millionaires or billionaires) has never had a chance in the registry. Limiting the number of sets a person can have listed will not change this.

As long as the 2nd set EXISTS, I'm not sure it makes much difference. There is always a way around it. Make a username for your wife...son....dog. "It's THEIR set!"

As a guy who thinks he's doing well to make the top 50 in any category, I don't much care either. But I guess I can see someone floundering in 5th might get angry if Mr. "I'm doing it TWICE", is in 1st and 3rd.

If the collectors with money running out of their ears want to build all of the top registry sets, then I say more power to them. I hope they have as much fun as I did to barely crack the top 50.

I don't get the feeling they're having fun. I think it's more of a quest for dominating the registry, not enjoying coins for whatever reasons. I think it would be difficult to find the time to personally pre-examine, obtain, and cherish thousands of coins individually and be delighted with each one as it arrives before throwing it in a pile and moving on to the next 50.

As I mentioned in another related thread, I've removed all my sets for the registry even though I had worked my way up to the ~25th position with one full set of date/mm Morgans. I didn't take them out so much due to rule change (not sure if they did) but for other reasons. Being 25 in the PCGS registry does not mean you have the 25th best set in the world. Far from it. It's only PCGS sets and only those who have taken the time to post them. The thing that disillusioned me the most was seeing "some" coins in higher ranking sets that, IMO, were over graded and sometimes even unsightly. (Ugly) Most deserved the grades they had but some did not.

I personally have looked at and enjoyed looking at many sets outside of the top ones. I think it's cool when people put their sets up because people like me can browse them. But only do it to satsify yourself. There are no rewards for those that make it to the top other than a pat on the back.

The rule I'd like to see change is to eliminate the weighting of different coins in a set. I don't think a coin should be more significant to a set just because it's rarer. People that have the rare coins will still come out on top because not everyone will have them.

And I think it's perfectly okay to post your sets even if it is to compete. Just remember it's only a subset of all sets out there and sets that make it to the top are not necessarily the top. (But probably among the top) There could be several sets out there that are better. I suspect my number 25 ranking was nearer 100 if all sets from all sources were posted.

There's nothing preventing the "little guy" from having fun with the registry. So what if you're 195th instead of 192nd because someone put together 3 extra sets at the top? I'm glad that people with crazy expensive sets actually post them so that I can see what's possible without having to wait for a set to be exhibited and then have to walk 280 miles from Arnstadt to Lübeck just to see it. Have fun with the hobby in the context of your own means. Build a set that means something to you and doesn't need to be validated with a plaque at a lunch. Build a showcase with an interesting theme. HRH always emphasized the importance of having fun with your coins.

    Hello @PTVETTER

The PCGS Set Registry rules do not state that you cannot start a duplicate set, the Registry, however, does not allow you to use the exact same coin (based on certification number) in a duplicate set.

There is a set I favor as I have more than a single set within it. I don't like selling off a duplicate or even a coin that betters the one it is replacing so I have other sets I facilitate. Even so, I can see the validity of the points made for only one set per member and would abide by this rule should it even be implemented. Of course, a workaround would be to register under a different handle thus keeping multiple sets.

If you wanted to get into the number five slot so you could provenance your set and there were people w/ dup sets in front of you, it would matter.

    In that case, yes...I agree.

Also...There are heavy-hitters blowing away little guys competing for higher positions in date-set categories.

I wish PCGS would give key coins a bit more points weight in proportion to their rarity too. A G-6 Liberty Seated rarity is worth well below EF common coins. If I want to collect keys first in grade I can afford, don't penalize me to someone who has mostly high grade common coins. We both spent quite a bit for the set, but focusing on affordable keys is disadvantageous points wise.

My G-6 1874-cc dime has half the points of an 1853 EF with arrows dime. I know PCGS wants us to have lots of certified coins, but please! I would much rather have my set and enjoy it, but this is annoying.

I am not familiar with the point system here, only NGC. Over there, it makes no sense as coins which are extremely common but in the highest grades receive points disproportionate to others much scarcer.

But,But,But, there are Top Pops in everyman sets also!
