Rob Drake, please stick to MLB.

keetskeets Posts: 25,351 ✭✭✭✭✭

What is it about people associated with Sports that makes them think we care about their political views?? Umpire Rob Drake is the latest to make a foray into this arena, perhaps he was bored with the end of the Regular Season and upset because he wasn't chosen to work any Post-Season games. I suppose that is a reflection on his Professional skill since only the best of the best are chosen for the Playoffs.

A suggestion for Mr. Drake --- spend the off-season honing your craft and stop thinking anyone cares about your Political views. We only care about how you understand the rules of MLB. Period.

End of rant.

That’s my biggest problem with the Sports World and the Media, I’m not sure why anyone would allow a Sports Personality to run his mouth about political topics, sure they have a right to their opinions but at the end of the day they are just people like you and me.

...and we run our mouths, albeit to a smaller audience.

in years to come advances will be made in Medicine, primarily in how we understand the Brain and its functioning. the use of social media platforms like Twitter and FaceBook, maybe even the PCGS Forums, will come under scrutiny while the proper terminology for the Syndrome is worded. for all their good, sites like Twitter are very inflammatory and rife with mental illness.

I hear what you're saying, but the thing is, Rob Drake is no different from you or me; he's a citizen of the United States, and he's entitled to free speech, just like the rest of us. I don't follow Twitter, and haven't seen his actual "tweet" or whatever it's called, other than to have seen the story on espn.com. If he used his own private Twitter account, and chose to send it out to those people who have chosen, of their own free will, to follow him on Twitter, then I see nothing wrong with what he did/said.

Anyone who wants him to not be able to say something, must be ok with themselves not being allowed to say the same thing.

We may not agree with what he said, but he does have the right to say it.

Look, if Rocky could beat Ivan Drago, then he could beat anyone. That's all I'm sayin.

he's entitled to free speech..........................We may not agree with what he said, but he does have the right to say it.

ah yes, the old free-speech defense and not really.

he probably has language in his contract with MLB which precludes him from saying anything which adversely affects or "reflects" on MLB. it's no different than whatever drug/alcohol policy you might have where you work. you are "free" to do whatever you want to away from work, but if you show up and get tested to reveal that use, well, how free are you then??

  • perkdogperkdog Posts: 30,649 ✭✭✭✭✭

I’m not saying he shouldn’t be allowed his free speech, I don’t care what anyone believes or how they vote ect.. everyone is entitled to their political and religious views without fear of retribution, ive never said they are not within their right BUT on a Sporting Stage I don’t believe they should prostitute that to express their views to people that are tuned into Sports for enjoyment. And another point is this guy or Lebron James shouldn’t be showcased eith their opinions by the media because they are no different than you or I. And Coin, we have gone down many rabbit holes here for sure but that is is talking to each other who tune in here for the conversation, we all have the ability to not get involved if we chose not too.

    Excellent point.

As I said in my post, "If he used his own private Twitter account", and he does not have anything on it referencing MLB or his relationship/employment with them, then he's speaking as himself as a private citizen.

If, however, he has something in there prominently featuring his umpiring job with MLB, or he is known to normally use the account for work/MLB related posts, then MLB should absolutely have the right to tell him to knock it off.

It's really the same thing as what happened with all the Kaepernick stuff, and all the players kneeling a few years ago. As long as they're doing it on their own time, and not in relation to their employment, then they have the absolute right to do/say it.

This could have all been avoided if he'd just set up a Pierre Delecto account for political posts.

  • stevekstevek Posts: 29,022 ✭✭✭✭✭

He did it away from the confines of the ballpark, so i don't have any problem with it.

BTW - We all know that if he was on "the other side" that Nike would have given him a fat contract to endorse a new line of umpire shoes.

    why do we know that??

What did he say that is so upsetting? I don't follow twitter.

I feel the same way about this impeachment try, but that is extreme.

If there's a civil war, what division would the Eagles play in?

    Does anyone know?

I've never heard of a civil war that was actually civil.

I’m on some gun forums and there are a lot of lunatics there that truly believe there is going to be an actual Civil War in this country any day now.

    Guns are cool. And vital.

Shooting guns is fun, and guns are highly collectible as well. However in my view, guns aren't a luxury, they are a necessity.

I own three guns, and nobody, and i mean nobody is ever taking them away. That right shall not be infringed. :)
