Erikthredd's Michael Jordan 5x7 Nike Poster Card Collection **2/25 GRADES POPPED**
Back when I originally started collecting Jordan cards in the late 80's there weren't many MJ cards, other than his early Fleer stuff, that were available in my area (MA) and the only Star card I could get was from the Lite All-Stars set. I think that was mainly because Larry Bird was in it. This was all years before attending my first card show and ebay didn't come along for another 10 years so adding to my MJ collection was pretty limited. What MJ had in abundance that I could get my hands on were his numerous posters and magazine covers/ads with Nike the clear leader of all things Jordan. Everytime I found a new image of his it would end up on my bedroom wall and thinking back I don't know how my parents never went ballistic on me with the amount of push-pins & scotch tape i used butchering said walls lol. (Little did I know that I had the perfect excuse at the time, just blame it all on the lead paint ) Then came the introduction to Hoops & Upper Deck and we all know where it went from there. As I got older I was in & out of the hobby numerous times and unfortunately all of the posters & pics never made the trip even though my cards did.
So fast forward to 2017 when I decided to collect again after a roughly 12-13 year hiatus, after hours looking into what I might want to collect I went with MJ's 80's/early 90's oddball stuff. I was pretty much priced out of his Star stuff as well as most of his high end 90's inserts so when I came across his 5"x7" Nike Poster Cards I was hooked. I spent alot of time on worthpoint/google researching which poster cards he had as well as getting help from a few members here & on ebay and I came up with a list of 29 5x7 cards that had him on it. I had no clue how often these popped up for sale or how long it might take to find all 29. It also didn't help that these weren't the same as looking for, say,an 89 Hoops #200. These poster cards get listed as poster cards, poster samples, poster ads, mini posters, counter displays, counter samples, counter ads, salesman displays, salesman ads and numerous other titles so I literally created a bookmarked folder with a saved ebay search for all of them. At one point there were about 60 different saved searches that I finally was able to condense down to a handful after finding 2/3rds of his cards during that stretch. Many only popped up for sale once or twice a year if that and I had to hope my saved searches caught them.
At this point my want list is down to just 6 remaining. I don't want to name them here for obvious reasons but here are pics of the ones I do own. There are a few that have different versions like earlier/later years, white/black background and border/no border. I apologize for the quality of the Iphone pics,my scanner & I have a love/hate relationship and right now he’s lucky to not get punted off the roof.
These five are the earliest issues from 1983-85. They have a thicker card stock than later years, glossy finish and a hole on one end for where they were placed in a counter-top binder in stores.
These next ones are roughly from the years 1987-1989. They're actually made out of very thin poster paper and are the easiest to damage by handling them.
Then this last grouping are from the 1990-92 years with a slightly thicker stock than the 87-89's.
(This first Is It The Shoes? with white background is currently in a BGS slab)
PSA has only graded 9 of the 29 different cards and I've been told without a published checklist they won't grade the others. I thought about grading them all through BGS,seeing that they slab anything, but I decided not to spend $600+ just to have them in a slab when I don't really care much about the grade. They look just as nice in a brand new UltraPro 5x7 sleeve, new 5x7 Toploader and a new Perfect Fit 5x7 sleeve. Storing them this way will take up much less space too. Thanks for checkng out my collection!

I'm digging this project. Hope you get the others.
I'm all about that Jordan stuff. Cards, stickers, posters & whatever else is cool. The rarer the better. And always in a PSA 10 if I can help it.
Any other big Jordan nuts out there let me know.
Great stuff! Being from North Carolina, I have always been a huge Jordan fan. I grew up watching Jordan, and looking at your collection brought back a lot great memories. Thanks for letting us have a peek.
Eric, you've put together an incredible collection! Thanks for sharing it, really awesome!
Those are phenomenal! Best of luck tracking down the remaining.
Three more down, three to go! All three are from the 87-89 years.

Great stuff, Eric! I completely forgot he was on the Supreme Court poster.
There's two versions to the Supreme Court poster, that one with MJ and this one in the link below that doesn't have MJ that I think is a few years older. The card I just posted above is a bit beat up and I may end up replacing down the line if I can.

Missed this thread the first time around. GREAT collection! Thanks for sharing.
The older one is what I was thinking of, I have one of the store display cards of that one.
If you end up upgrading your Supreme Court card let me know, I could use one for my Moses Malone collection and the condition isn't as important to me.
Hello all,
I to am a collector of these Nike "poster cards" Please see my set at :
https://www.psacard.com/psasetregistry/misc-sports/company-sets/1983-85-nike-poster-cards/alltimeset/229423
I have also just done a piece for SCD which can be found here:
https://sportscollectorsdigest.com/collecting-101/nike-poster-cards-michael-jordan
this will also be in print in the June 5th issue, I am told.
To update you in terms of grading it still is a mess. PSA has been on and off and at this point is only grading the thick black ones with the punch hole (type 1) . I will be trying to get them to accept the checklist that is on the SCD page since hopefully that makes it an "official" checklist. If anyone can fill in any of the blanks for me please make contact.
Do realize the Jordan MVP poster (the last one shown in this discussion [under supreme court]) is blank backed, but from the poster we know it is Nike number 290883. The supreme court Jordan is also blank backed and as of yet we do not know its Nike 290xxx number. If anyone has this poster and sees a date on it please let me know.
PSA is also refusing to allow the Jordan "shirts and shins" poster card (which they are grading) into the Jordan master set because "we cannot confirm the player in the photo is Jordan and the card does not focus on Jordan" Are you kidding me !!!!
Hey Phil, thanks for the info. I haven't really thought about grading these because I didn't want to have a third of them in slabs and the rest in toploaders,I'd rather just keep them all stored the same for now.
I did do a bit of research a while back and came across these Nike Poster Catalogs on Worthpoint, have you ever tried showing any of these to PSA's grading department? It looks like some of these catalogs show the actual poster cards with serial number and I thought they might be helpful if presented to the PSA graders. I just haven't seen any for sale since learning about them.

I will be sending the SCD article and link to PSA as soon as I finish loading all my info onto the new NIKE POSTER CARD web page at:

This auction just went live that has the 1990 Nike Poster Catalog with Bo on the cover and it also has an order form that list the poster/player/sku. Looks like Nike has the Shirts & Skins listed as a Michael Jordan poster on both the catalog & order form.

ERIC - thanks for that reference ...I have the order forms for 1992 and 1991. This is the one for 1990...exactly what I need.
By the way 2 more questions .
1) I do not think the BB player in the no finish line is Jordan. What is the evidence for that. Those are all reprinted posters from the late 1970s and Jordan was a kid then.
2) I also have the Supreme court poster with Jordan. Do you have any idea what year thats from ??
Eric,
Got a photo of the 1990 order form you mentioned above...That helps alot with the checklist...thanks
My evidence of it actually being Jordan on the the No Finish Line honestly isn't all that great. I kept coming across old ebay listings for the actual poster itself where sellers kept naming the player as Jordan. I came across a few other sites other than ebay that had it listed as Jordan as well. I also did see a couple saying it was Charles Barkley but no chance in hell that it was Barkley because the player on the poster looks to have a totally different body type. So from there I've just went with it as Jordan until proven otherwise. edit: The order form in the ebay auction I listed above actually might prove it's not him. Where his posters were listed with either (Jordan) or (Jordan/Lee) next to the poster name, there was just Basketball "No Finish Line" for this one.
I got the Supreme Court poster after buying the Poster card box/set that also had the Playground,High Flying 360 w/ t/b black borders,Best on Earth/Mars blk version,1988 NBA MVP and the There Is No Finish Line. Let me see if I could dig up the year, I also remember seeing it in one of the old Nike catalog links I saved and IIRC there was a pic of the Supreme Court where it had the sku number for it but I couldn't find a way to blow it up to where it was legible. I'll see if I can find it again.

Erik - that is a 1991 catalog , have seen it before. Seller got > $200 for it.
By the way spoke to Bill Sumner this morning. He took dozens of the iconic Nike poster pictures back in the day. He said unequivicably (SP?) that the player in 290812 is NOT Jordan. He is some random kid in he gym at North Texas State where he too the picture years ago.
It's good to get a definite answer on the No Finish Line card. That '90 catalog ended up going for $200+ too which was cosiderably more than I expected it to sell for. The previous one I came across sold for $40.
I've been looking for the Jordan/Spike Lee Orbit #290848 poster card for a long time,if you happen to have an extra or hear about one for sell please think of me.

My Nike Jordan article should be i n Sports Collectors daily today. Here is my list ...do we agree ?? Thats 27 total
That's what I had but also the 5"x7" #292335 Wings I have pictured above. I originally had 29 total but the No Finish Line made it 28. I still need the Orbit, Jordan Cloud and That's All Folks to reach the 28.

I do not have an original one, I have copies of all the pages. It is not a 89/90 catalog. It was issued in Jan 1991 because I have a copy of the order form that came with it.
ALSO: I have been told that 995 and 965 are "Jordan pop art" posters. I have not included them since I have never seen the posters let alone the poster cards. Right now those two numbers are unassigned. Have you ever heard of them ?
No I haven't but I'll spend some time over the next few days looking for something like that. I'm wondering if they could possibly just be the Jordan symbol over a colored background or something similar? Do you know roughly the year & type that the two are? I'll let you know if I dig anything up.

sorry for the delay in answering here.
The blog now has the URL www.nikepostercards.com & includes pictures of everyone of them that is known as well as complete checklists.
so I've got good news and bad news concerning PSA grading......
Good news first...PSA has accepted all my documentation and is now grading ALL OF THEM. Even the ones with no info on front or back.
The bad news is that they are now charging $50 to grade any of these...so my grading has come to a halt.
I subbed my 19 Jordan’s so thank you for all the work you put in that made this possible. I’m really looking forward to getting these back slabbed even though the grades will likely be all over the place. It’s my first time grading these thin poster paper-type Cards so we’ll see how they go.

Grades just popped on my Nike Poster Card order and overall I honestly did better than I was expecting. With the first four cards being laminated and the other fifteen made out of very thin poster paper stock that creases if you breathe on it, I wasn’t sure what to expect so to see some 8-10’s in there I’ll take them. The Playground card was originally graded a PSA 7 but got damaged while being slabbed, I haven’t seen it yet but it ended up a 5 and I got 40% off my total order as reimbursement.

I know I said this in my previous comment but again huge thanks to @ArmourPhil for all the work he did behind the scenes in recent years. First cataloguing an accurate checklist of the hundreds of known Nike Poster Cards from the cards themselves then creating a blog with all of this information. And secondly for convincing PSA to finally grade them all. Thanks again Phil!

I think I've got 5-6 different ones, not counting the multiple copies of Niketown that got N9'd my last attempt.
Hey, It may happen someday. I’d love to see PSA start grading these 4x6 Nike Air Jordan Retro cards that got distributed with a new pair of Jordan’s but it’s tough though because some of them were released in multiple years apart. https://www.sneakerfiles.com/complete-air-jordan-retro-cards-guide/
Do you know of any clear sleeves or bags that fit the PSA 5x7 card slabs? I think I measured them out at 6 5/8” x 10 1/8” x 3/8” and I was thinking about posting a thread to see if anyone here can recommend anything close to them before I started experimenting with purchases on eBay.

No idea on bags for those, I just use the PSA return boxes to store. Comic bags might work, I'll have to see if I can dig some up.
I’ve found 7”x10” bags that are both open top and sealed. The sealed will be just too short. I was looking for 7x11or12 with sealable flaps that I could always cut to make longer.
