Scratches on Early Copper

JimWJimW Posts: 577 ✭✭✭✭

I am somewhat perplexed because some coins which seem to have considerable scratches get a straight grade, whereas others with a single scratch get net graded.

An apparent example of the former is:

Is there a difference among the TPG in their tolerance for scratches?
Or perhaps a temporal issue, e.g., more lenient on scratches now as compared to the past (or vis-versa)?
Or ??
My observations have mostly been on the 1793 - 1807 series.
Appreciate any insights from forum members :)

In shopping for early copper type, including colonials, I've noticed the same thing. Scratches are to be expected but when they form patterns the implication is an old cleaning or PMD of some sort, rather than normal circulation. I've seen what I think are inconsistencies in judgement calls concerning corrosion or environmental damage as well. Need to really look closely at early copper and be patient to find an acceptable example for type. Comments may not be limited to coppers, but they are more susceptible.

Agreed; I see many inconsistencies as well. And if anything I think they were looser in the older holders.
I bought my 11c in a details holder after a lot of shopping. It had better detail and nicer surfaces than comparable straight graded coins, and was cheaper to boot.

Yes, and the difference is awfully HUGE! :(

I sure don't see the rationale for a straight grade on that coin.

I agree. I could see that early type straight grade with one or two light scratches but that's severely scratched. Should be in a details holder.

I agree with everybody and will not buy that coin. B)
