So excited for 2020 heritage. 1971 Topps is my favorite set from the 70's.

  • georgebailey2georgebailey2 Posts: 1,045 ✭✭✭

The spring training photos above are uninteresting. Sort of like the proliferation of the no-cap head shots from the 1969 set.
The 1971 set was the first to incorporate action photos in the set. In addition, a majority of the posed photos were still taken at Shea or Yankee Stadium and included the stands as part of the background. The combo provided a majority of cards that are a lot more visually stimulating than posed spring training photos with monotonous backgrounds.

I'll say this again because we have about four 2020 Hertiage threads going now; this set is going to be off the charts amazing. Back up the 5th wheel and load em up.

    Collecting PSA 9's from 1970-1977. Raw 9's from 72-77. Raw 10's from '78-'83.
Collecting Unopened from '72-'83; mostly BBCE certified boxes/cases/racks.
    Prefer to buy in bulk.

I didn’t know they were bringing back the Greatest Moments set. That’s incredible! An original GM Yaz is on my collecting bucket list.

    #1 John Hannah master set

    I'll buy.

However. This year I think they way, way over produced the product based on the steep discounts offered at this time. Blowout e.g. - from around 1100+ to less than 800 at this time for a hobby case.

Heck, there's still blasters at my local Target collecting dust.

Almost makes me want to wait before purchasing a case?

I'm in. Not sure how much, but thinking about a case.

I'm in for a few hobby packs.

Hope they don't let the presses run like they clearly did this year.

This. There is retail still choking the shelves at Wal Marts and Targets by me. It's not my method in the past but I'm thinking about buying a complete base set with SP's and then just picking up retail to help replace any way OC or dinged cards in the set I get. No cases, no hand collating a master set from scratch. INCREDIBLY much more cost effective and will still come up with the set I want.

Hiya Dan - I hear ya.

    One thing tho?

I really enjoy ripping the case, putting the set together and bitching about the collation.

And, perhaps hitting a case card that's actually something to get excited about. Yup, I'm talking about my PSA 10 - 10 Ryan auto blue inker.

$975 pre-order for a case? What were pre-order cases going for before the Judge explosion in 2017?

more add on cards than the base set, makes a truly complete set impossible.

Previous transactions: Wondercoin, goldman86, dmarks, Type2
  • Mick65Mick65 Posts: 722 ✭✭✭

I think there was a set about 10 years ago, where I completed the set with one case. The base, SP and all the standard insert sets. That was a good year. :D

I think the marketing team at Topps needed me to spend more.... so they kept adding more variations and made it impossible to do that again.

    Yep,

That's why I consider a Master set as the Base, all main subsets, and any SP's that are available in all distribution. I pay no attention to hobby only SP's and inserts.

I hope they have a card in this set that pays homage to the iconic Munson card.

Agree… those are the "cool" parallels. Unless they make it some "variation" that is nearly impossible to pull from a pack.

I bought a presell case despite the price because the last few years , boxes have skyrocketed after initial release. Just never know which way it'll break. There have been several years one master set (base, insert sets and SP's) came from 1 hobby case for me but not in the last few years. Enjoy the ripping anyway.
