Has anybody here heard of or seen a proof engraved or counterstamped U.S. classic coin?

from 1792 to 1915?

The recently graded specimen 1878-S $1 by NGC is the closest I can come up with.
Nope. May we please see the one (?) you have found?
I believe there is a Proof Classic Head $2-1/2 engraved with a set of initials.
I've often wondered if a chopmarked Proof Trade $ exists.
1804 $1 Dexter Specimen has a "D" punched on the reverse in the clouds.
Here it is.

Proof status iffy, but the only other two known from these dies are Proof. I have a romantic notion that Gobrecht engraved this for a relative, but I never could match the initials with any known relative.
I seem to remember seeing pictures of an engraved Proof Morgan dollar.
This article mentioned an 1836 Gobrecht Dollar that Andrew Jackson had engraved. Good chance it was a Proof.

Here is an engraved reverse on a Proof 1882 Double Eagle that I mailed a bid in for back in 1993. It was in the March 1993 Bowers and Merena "The Edmonton Sale". I was somewhat close but not quite. It brought $3,850.

Interesting that the names have been redacted on the coin. Seems like it would be quite a feat to find the people now.
Yes, it is quite interesting.
I wonder what the "rest of the story" is?
I guess we'll never know.
I'm guessing it might have been redacted as the consignors might have been relatives of the people mentioned.
Perhaps there was a rift in the family or perhaps the rest.if the family did not know the consignor had it....
Well I thought that too until I read the auction description where it says that the surnames were effaced "long ago."
Presuming that the description is accurate. (?)
Thx for pointing that out. I had not read the description. My guess is dame sort of subterfuge, just a generation or two earlier. Too bad to deface a great coin (that was already defaced
).
I have a 1877 proof trade dollar holed and stamped by a railroad company
