I went all the way from Akron, OH to Pittsburgh to get that one when the ANA show was held there in 2004. My set of proof Buffs is the crown jewel of my collection.

Very much a transitional time for proof coins. Cents were initially satin finish and then were converted to brilliant finish. Collecting "untoned" MS versions in RD or CAM can be very expensive. But this coin that I had to overpay for is a PR66BN Stain cent........
but Pop 2/0 is not going to be inexpensive.
Like the coin posted above, many 1936 coins have very attractive toning. They seem to age well.
OINK
whats a stain cent?

Am assuming here that this set will ultimately have both a satin and a brilliant version of the 1936 and 1937 cent and nickel,
and for the dime, quarter , and half dollar only a brilliant version. The is what most collectors go after. But there are perhaps 6 or 7 of the satin finish variance for the dime! This is mentioned in Breen’s proof encyclopedia on page
226! There may be some of these satin finish proof dimes out there posting as a normal uncirculated mint state dime!
Be on the lookout for this dime which may well exist. Also I have heard that for the buffalo nickel there is a third type which is sort of a hybrid of t he satin and brilliant finish. Saw one of these on flea-bay years ago. So much left to discover.

Yes this set will have both of the cents and nickels.
Stuppler recently had a beautiful quarter but it was already sold by the time I saw it. Reasonably priced too.
Wouldn’t it be nice to find one of those 1936 satin finish dimes.? If you did only problem would be getting pcgs and ngc
to call it such. They do not like doing things like this cause it would make all the registry sets of proof coinage from 1936
to 1942 incomplete?!

The transition of finish from brilliant to satin-like is explained in Roger Burdette's book. I'll take his research over Walter Breen's any day of the week. I'm sure if there was any documentation supporting production of satin finish dimes he would have found it and written about it.
One-year bump and update to OP to include the two latest additions. The Brilliant 5C and the 25C, these were also in a stand-alone thread so not "forum new".

I'd be willing to bet that these would be coins from the satin die that were struck past the mid-point of the die. Just the striking of the coins would polish the die to a degree. That's just my thoughts, tho.
Update:
Brilliant 1C has been acquired. PR65RD CAC. Image in the OP
Just the satin left to complete the set, this will probably take another year to find one that I like and that isn't moon money.
These seem to be getting more expensive...

Nice eye appealing PR RD 1936 cents are the toughest coins in the 1936 set to locate imo-and expensive. I need both to complete my 1936 set. Some day!.

Yes they are. I've been looking for a nice one for a while, this one popped up on the 'Bay and I thought it looked really nice and CAC approved. I probably paid a bit too much but that's OK.

Bump for set completion! Just a little over 3 years to complete.
That's a beautiful set ! My set only lacks the brilliant cent ( not interested in the satin coins). Here's my problem with purchasing 1936 proof cents. Most available coins are no longer RED, they are RB but sell for RD prices. You'll find out the hard way if you ever want to reholder - they won't do it !
Most of the available brilliant cents have changed hands so many times that the holders are damaged. And guess what, they won't reholder RED. Happened to me a couple times and I was lucky the first time to sell it even. Second time not so lucky. So I'm waiting for a properly designated Pf 65 RB coin to purchase. Yours appears to be one of those that has turned in the holder. Am I out of bounds here ?

I know what you mean, the cents were the most difficult coins for me to locate. As far as the brilliant cent RD turning to RB, it has a nice red color that has not turned. Maybe not as bright as my 37-42 cents, but definitely still RD. The satin proof is NOT as red as the trueview makes it seem, though.

So I’ve been reading this and can’t seem to stay in the up to $3k range for many of these. Did the prices rise that much since 2019?
Prices are up almost across the board. I think if I had started this set one year later I would have been in big(ger) trouble. The only coin I went above $3k on is the satin proof cent.
Congratulations on your beautiful set. The half dollar is very nice. Very nice.
Nevertheless my favorite is the satin nickel.
Wonderful set with excellent eye appeal!

I like it! The half and quarter appear to been have struck later in the year, when brilliant cents and nickels were being produced.
As to satin proof dimes - they do not exist and never will.
