Info on the Plating of So-Called Wilson Dollars

Anyone have any info/ Knowledge on the subject.
maybe can point me to a book , article or someones memory on same, doing some research.
Not convinced done as counterfeiting entirely.

I have seen brighten copper washed bronzes, silver plated coppers and vermeil plated coppers.
In the 80's seen them sold in small blue and white boxes just large enough to fit the medal.
I was not knowledgeable enough at the time to inquire, except seem to coincide with Audry Beebe's vault sale not the main sale catalog.

They turn up on occasionally sans the box..
