1882 O/S VAM 4, EDS or LDS?

Coin is in an older NGC holder, graded MS61 and attributed VAM-4.

According to the VAM World page for the 82o VAM-4:

...about half way down the page the EDS markers, besides the MM, are lots of tiny pits on the reverse eagle and die gouges in the ear are markers of the EDS...and this coin definitely has both of those. The mint mark is throwing me off however. It kinda looks like a EDS as it's very faint, and not a full bar...but looking for opinions on this one if anybody has any!

This is an interesting coin as it has some of the markers for EDS as well as some of the markers for LDS.

I believe that, as far as our hosts are concerned, they would call this LDS as it does not match 100%, however I am not very well-versed in VAM's and the attribution of such as far as third party graders are concerned. Given the spread in values, I hope it is EDS!

LDS.... the gouges in the ear were used to confirm EDS & LDS were the same die.

Several folks that study these coins including me believe that the EDS and LDS designations used for these coins by the VAM "experts" actually are backward. :( I think this will eventually be proven to the satisfaction of all.

VAMWorlds page needs to be rewritten then. It is very confusing.

I am inclined to agree, I always thought it was the other way around myself until I actually looked into it. It makes no sense to me that the mintmark would become more prominent as the die wore down, rather than less prominent, however I am nowhere near an expert in die states.

BINGO, you have now joined David Lange and myself in that OBVIOUS conclusion. Nevertheless, old beliefs die hard. I'll remind the doubters here that the EDS/LDS O/S crap was a product of the group who thought the "Micro O" counterfeit Morgan dollars were genuine. Wink.
