I've always collected older cards, but I'm interested in buying some new stuff now. This may be a dumb question, but what are "gravity" boxes / packs? How are they different from hobby and retail packs? Thanks!!

Ha. The Gravity hit me hard. If these packs were based on the content, they would float away since they are so light in value.
I’ll admit it, I bought them at Dollar General. I think that is one of the 12 steps after bargaining.
DT packs are cheaper with fewer cards and usually no inserts...
Yup I learned the hard way. I was fooled since other retail has improved.
The two retail products which are garbage (at least for football) are gravity packs and the Panini fat packs (the ones with 12 or so cards each, not the 3 pack value hangers). .
It seems the odds of pulling autos or refractors (which seem to be the only valuable type of new cards) are extremely low, with the odds of pulling one of those of a superstar player being obviously much lower. I guess I would be looking for brands that have the best shot of pulling valuable cards - I'm mostly interested in basketball and football
I've heard glory stories about Prizm gravity boxes if you can get them unmolested. However, I basically stay away from them. It sounds like you want to buy hobby boxes. At least hobby boxes will have guaranteed hits in them -- relics, autographs, autographed relics, reliced autographs, etc. You can probably get them a little cheaper on eBay but I've become increasingly wary of eBay sellers. Just too easy for them to buy a case, [insert nefarious things here that I will not mention], and then sell off the remaining boxes.
The alternative is to buy from a large retailer like Blowout, Steel City, etc. All they do is sell unopened so there's no incentive for them to screw their customers. They'll just pull out the next box from the case and mail it to you.
If you have to buy retail, the mega boxes are pretty much search proof. The value packs can probably be weighed but the real draw in them is the extra parallels you get like pink refractors, camo, whatever, and you can't weigh those. Just double check that the cellophane wrapping on all the boxes is branded and not clear.

Its just another version of retail packs. As you take packs out of the box, "gravity" brings the next packs down to be taken.
Save ur money. They are a waste of time. I bought a box of 2017 donruss FB and it was a complete waste of money. Pulled literally nothing.

I once was waiting for my wife at the snack bar in Target.
Cards were in plain view.
Watched a man spend the better part of 15 minutes "feeling" for "gravity" packs with inserts.
ill pick up a couple of sealed gravity boxes every year

If I was going to get some newer boxes or packs, which type of packs do you recommend? I know they have jumbo, retail, hobby, gravity, etc...
Depends on which line you were thinking of due to pack odds and availability of the contents within.

It's decided.........gravity sucks.
