    1879 was the first of the low mintage/high collected Philadelphia run that went through 1891. Low mintage caused many to hoard and so the survival rate in uncirculated is very high. There may be more gem++ (67 or so) 1879s than any other date. JBN's above is a nice one.

    Output of Morgan dollars was in the tens of millions for these years.

    A friend of mine bought a half dollar love token dated 1879. Luckily they planed off the reverse so you could see that they used a rare coin. The person that sold it to him didn't notice the date, or didn't realize how low the mintage was.
